SEATTLE - Early morning hours and thousands of excited people kicked off the semi-annual Glassybaby sale Saturday in the Madrona neighborhood.
A Glassybaby is a colored, glass candleholder that spawned out of hope and inspiration. Lee Rhodes, three-time cancer survivor and Glassybaby founder, was given a handmade votive holder during her battle and it provided so much strength that she decided to pay it forward.
"When you're sick the best thing to do is build a community and the best way to do that is to have something to build it around. Instead of it being me, it seemed to flow out of this little thing that we would put tea lights in and it became Glassybaby. Everyone lit them for me and then they started lighting them for other people - you know, Glassybaby is an object but it's also a community that we all love and share," said Lee Rhodes, owner of Glassybaby.
Glassybaby has donated more than $500,000 to various charities in the area to help cancer patients with things like bus fare, childcare, and groceries so that they can focus on their treatment.
