Powell boys suffered 'chop injuries' to neck and head

GRAHAM, Wash. -- Gallons of gasoline spread throughout the home of Josh Powell caused the inferno that destroyed his home Sunday, authorities said Monday evening, but his two young sons, Charlie and Braden, also suffered from what investigators described as "chop injuries" to their heads or necks.

Autopsies on the three bodies were completed late Monday, confirming that the boys died as a result of homicide, and Josh Powell died as a result of suicide from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner confirmed Charlie Powell, 5, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, but a chop injury to his neck was a contributing factor. Braden Powell, 7, died in the same manner, but sufferred a chop injury to the neck and head.

Investigators recovered a hatchet that they believe was used on the boys.

Detectives called the explosion a "deliberate, planned event" in which two five-gallon cans of gasoline were used as an accelerant to blast the home apart; gas from one can was spread around the house, and the other can was apparently ignited in the center of the house, where the bodies of Josh, Charlie and Braden were found.

The house burst into flames after a social worker brought the boys there for a supervised visit. Powell blocked the social worker from entering the house.

Investigation shifts to Josh Powell's father

The Sunday blaze at Powell's home brought yet another twist in the very public scandal and investigation that began when Josh's wife, Susan Powell, vanished from the family's Utah home in 2009.

The investigation now shifts to Josh's father, Steven Powell, who is currently jailed on voyerism and child pornography charges and has refused to be interviewed since the explosion. Last fall, detectives found images and video of neighborhood girls, as well as Susan Powell, in his possession. Steven has been named a person of interest in her disappearance.

Susan's parents believe Steven Powell holds the key to finding out what really happened to their daughter.

"I think he is the only one who would know. I think Josh would have confided in him enough to know where she might be," said Chuck Cox. "He's not going to tell us anything."

"It's up to the police," said Judy Cox.

Steven Powell claimed he and Susan had a romantic relationship, but detectives said Monday those statements are "a flat out lie," and that Susan viewed her father-in-law as a "creep, and weird."

Steven Powell has been put on suicide watch. Investigators have not said when they planned to speak to him.

Emails from Josh Powell found

Multiple emails from Josh Powell have since been found in close family members' in-boxes, including his cousins, and his pastor. Details of those emails have not been made explicitly clear, except that they included goodbyes and how to take care of any final business.

INTERACTIVE: Review the entire Powell case from the beginning

All of the emails were sent minutes before the social worker showed up at Powell's home with his sons Sunday afternoon for a court-ordered visitation.

Detectives said more evidence has emerged about Josh Powell's actions leading up to Sunday's blast, such as taking the boys' toys and books to Goodwill.

The deaths of Powell and the two boys brings an end to a case that started in December, 2009, when Josh's wife Susan went missing in the Utah desert. Her body has still not been found.

Attorneys for Susan's parents have said recently the boys had begun to talk about what happened the night their mother went missing, saying, "Mommy was in the trunk." Josh maintained he and the boys went camping the night Susan disappeared, around 12:30 a.m.

However, detectives said Monday despite all of the evidence found so far at the scene, none of it has had anything to do with the disappearance of Susan.

Welp, since the dope busts are going on apiece, unchecked, we as a society PROVE we care more about someone ELSE'S mental space, the use of ones' OWN body, than we do about the rapists, torturers and murderers of children. Maybe if the LEOs weren't spending their budgets jacking up Joe Crackhead & Bobby the Grower, they'd have enuff resources for REAL crime. BTW, do they seize all the assets of child murderers too?

@james again..If I remember, the name of the social worker was given and believe she was interviewed on television? I also feel sorry for this woman..I have to say again that a woman should never have been assigned to monitor Josh Powell when children were visiting him. One would think the history of Susan Powell's missing body and Josh's failure to cooperate with the investigation, etc. the system would have taken extra precautions to protect those little boys. The Judge who was supposed to be looking after the best interest of the children dropped the ball..AND CPS the same..I'm not sure if the social worker was sent by CPS or a private contractor was involved? RIP Charlie and Braden. God Bless Susan's parents/family.

Nice to see a lot of sympathy going out to the Cox family, I completely agree with it and pray they find a way to someday live normal lives. However, I feel awful for the social worker and can't imagine the utter horror and helplessness she must have felt when it became clear what was happening. God bless you, unnamed social worker, I hope you get the help you need to recover from such a horrendous experience.

I am pitifully lost for words...Two young boys anxious to see their father- at a time when they needed him most, were not only let down but betrayed by the one person they trusted implicitly. Their last moments were surely horror-stricken. If there is a God, I prey Mr. Powell will be judged and sentenced accordingly.

only a monster could do such a thing. and if steven powell knows what happened to susan and he does not disclose it (out of conscience and not a plea bargain) he is no less a monster. (not that i'm necessarily convinced the apple didn't fall far from the tree)

@leonaf..you must be a new kid on the block as that camping area has been searched several times and nothing found.. This Judge new this man was emotionally disturbed otherwise she wouldn't have taken Charlie and Branden away from him and stipulated he undergoes physchological testing ..Of which he chose not to do..AND..she allows visitation in his home and expecting a woman to over power Josh Powell if he became violent..Had the social worker been a man, he could have kicked that door down in a Texas minute and save those two innocent children. Bottom line, Judge knowing what she did, there should never have been an in home visitation with Josh..It should have been in a private room in the Court House, wherever, with a guard and a social worker in the room..We have a long, long ways to go before the Judicial System/the Courts understand what "in the best interest of the child/children" mean..

I do not care how much you cannot live without your kids, there is no way I could violently hatchet them! If I was insane, I could see carbon monoxide in a car or something, poison pill, something, but a hatchet??? He could have easily NOT LIVED without them. By killing HIMSELF ONLY!

After reading this, I am so angry and crying for those boys. I can't even imagine what their last moments were. I am a foster parent myself and I know the social workers have to work within our system that is in place and they really do try to protect the children. I have seen Social Workers in court really fight a judge to the best interest of the child. In the end it's up to the judge to take all the information from all the many attorneys and state the orders that everyone has to follow. The parents each have their own attorney, kids each have their own attorney and the state has their attorney, then their is the people who care for the child that have a right to be in court to have their say about the children too. On the other hand the system we are bound to has improved in licensing foster families (due to abuse by foster families) by making it harder to become licensed. Hopefully, they now focus on the protection process in the courts and better protect the children.

Every day our state does something to remind us that our children don't matter... from pathetic laws, statutes and sentencing guidelines for sex offenders, a very under funded social services program and victim rights programs that forget about the continuing needs after a trial is over. It is disgusting, cruel and heartbreaking when something like this happens that could have been so easily avoided by making the visitation supervised at a safe location. Washington needs to get it's act together.

The ONLY comfort now is knowing that those little boys are in heaven with Jesus and their mommy and nobody will ever hurt them again. Josh...I have no doubt where you are and you deserve whatever wrath is dealt to you on judgement day. I pray that they find Susan and give the Cox family some closure. Prayers to all of you!

Washington needs to follow other states and not allow Supervised visits at the home, but at safe public places. It wouldnt have prevented Josh Powell from killing himself, but may have saved the 2 boys. what a horific tragedy.

chad343 – Seriously? Not only does the judge have the "right" (as you call it) but the judge also has the duty and responsibility to make such orders. The facts are sexual predators are real. Husbands that murder there spouses are real. Parents who brutalize and murder their children are real. And while you may not, courts see plenty of that reality. In hind-sight, I'm rather surprised anyone would think Josh (so-called) "snapped" because he was ordered to take a "psycho-sexual evaluation". Advocating that Josh is somehow, in-any-way what-so-ever, a victim in this nightmarish tragedy is as wrong as anything I have ever heard in my life. Josh was undoubtedly a psychopath a long time ago. And even if you don't believe that, surely you agree he was a psychopath at the point he planned, carried out, and covered up his wife's murder. That, BTW, was long before the "psycho-sexual evaluation" order, which apparently leaves you with a strong (though misdirected) feeling of displeasure.

Shame shame shame on the Pierce County Law Enforcement for allowing the details of the murders of these boys to be given to the media. This is sick. The public does not need to know the absolute details. It was horrifying enough that they died. I just hope they find Susan so she can be properly laid to rest.

Chad, Josh was not a murder in the making. He had already killed his wife two years ago. Unless you believe that totally nonsensical excuse ( alibi ) that he took the boys out for a camping trip at 12:30 AM during a blizzard for 6 hours. And when they got home Susan was no where to be seen. And of course there is no way that he would have ever killed his wife, he loved her. Hard to explain though how he could chop his boys in the neck with a hatchet/ axe and then finish the job by setting the entire house on fire.

To the people who are defending this monster. When you "snap" from being "pushed over the edge" you dont plan something to the extent of giving away the childs toys and sending family instructions on how to take care of whats left. When you "snap" you just go kill. This proves Josh was capable of not only performing the most hanus of crimes, but PLANNING them in advance.

Here is a guy who was under investigation for his wife's disappearance, and the State had no common sense, sending the children with a woman supervising the visitation at this monster's house. She could have been the fourth victim. Years ago, several members of my family were brutally murdered and dumped in mass graves. I have no words to express how I felt by then, I was numb and lost. I cried out and told God that it was too much to bear. Today, I'm at peace. To the loved ones surviving this senseless tragedy---I'm praying for you, that God wipes your tear, brings you comfort, peace and forgiveness as He did for me.

so let me get this straight...in our state its okay for DHSH to take kids away from a loving home just because someone told on them that they spank their kid but yet when a wife goes missing and they suspect the husband, DHSH sees no problem with giving the kids back to the father..? So its perfectly fine in this state to murder your family and not spank the children so they might learn right from wrong...I think DHSH should be in a heap of trouble for letting the kids go back to their father..

Great job justice system! Especially you, Judge Kathryn Nelson, for backing a crazy man into a corner. See what happens when, because police find a picture that doesn't agree with your "expert" opinion of what people should look at (because millions of others on the internet don't see the same things every day), you back someone into a corner with the modern equivalent of a witch hunt? Yes, this was terrible, but it COULD have been prevented if this judge who thought she had the right to twist someone's dignity to the ultimate extreme with a "psycho-sexual evaluation" was subject to oversight by regulatory officials. What's even sicker is that society will continue to blame him, completely ignoring the judge who DROVE him to snap, thinking that "he got what he deserved". Bull. He may have been a murderer in the making. He may have been a sick, twisted, mess of a human. But that DOESN'T make it right for a judge to strip him of human dignity in that way. Accountability by all!

P.S. What purpose were visitations to serve? We used to swing the other way. About 25 years ago, this man wouldn't have seen his children. How were these two young boys going to benefit from seeing this person of interest that put "mommy in the trunk" that just happens to be their biological father? I mean really. Visitations were hardly appropriate and, if they were to take place: why not a neutral location?

This Josh Powell was one sadist, to have attacked his own children. I honestly think that taking an ax to them in the neck was horrid. You know that they felt pain. What right did he have to determine whether they should remain alive or not? At least they are rejoined with their mother.

Since he wants to kill himself, he should be allowed to IF he can lead investigators to the body.
