OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Biologists who examined a gray whale that died after stranding on a West Seattle beach say it had a large amount of garbage in its stomach -- ranging from a pair of sweat pants to a golf ball.

The scientists say most of the whale's stomach contents was algae -- typical of the bottom-feeding mammals. But they say a surprising amount of human debris was found. Besides the pants and golf ball, there were more than 20 plastic bags, small towels, duct tape and surgical gloves.

The 37-foot whale stranded last Wednesday. Biologists took a large number of samples, but say the results from the examination won't be known for weeks or months.

Research biologist John Calambokidis says all the debris can at least serve as a reminder of our impact on the Puget Sound.

"Even with all our awareness and attempts to improve the Sound, there is still quite a legacy of our past behavior and current behavior that still exists down there on the bottom," he said.

Puget Sound is a vast unflushed toilet bowl. The majority of the people living in this region say they care about our water ways, but in reality, they don't give a darn. They care more about the Seahawks upcoming season, or all of the other bull. China, a country that has been polluted to an astonishing degree, finally realized last year, yes last year, 2009 that they had to do something to stop the pollution, so they banned plastic bags in the entire country. They still make them, but they ship them to the idiots in the USA and O Canada who can,t get enough of them. Don't forget to ask the clerk to double bag the next time you go to safeway or walmart. Oh, one other thing. Kiss Puget Sound and it's whales goodbye forever.

David5198- thanks for the directive! I needed a chuckle! Now I have images in my head of someone swimming alongside of the whale and cramming garbage into their gullet!

Sadly 'Tracker1' the suggestion that we convert to glass and paper instead of plastic has it's own set of problems. In fact one of the very reasons that plastics are in such wide use is because of the PR that surrounded it's initial launch into general consumerism. It was thought that if we had a lighter more durable medium that was cheap to produce, it would be better for the environment and consumer. Less trees needed to be felled if we could get away from paper bags. No broken glass on neighourhood streets and parkland. Less waste due to ruptured and cracked containers during shipping. Increased savings in fuel costs because of lighter weight. The list of pro plastics was quite impressive. Moreover if people won't recycle a plastic water bottle, it would take a great leap of faith to believe that they would eagerly try to recycle glass. The modern mind set is such that, easier is better. (And) It's MUCH easier to just dump garbage where you can't see it and walk away...

that's right suedale, it's nobodies fault so just keep doing what you're doing without caring about anyone else or what effect it has on the environment until one day the fish are all dead and people are dying because there is not enough food; selfish.

Hmmmmm..... A golf ball that was tossed into Puget Sound by a 5 year old. Twenty plastic bags blown across land and settling in the waters. Sweatpants laying loose on the bow of a speeding boat. Ooops! They blew off. Sorry folks, things are not perfect and 100% void of getting in that water. Quit being so quick to point fingers.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but, doesn't some cities/states such as New York barge their garbage and dump it out in the Atlantic? It seems that I remember them doing this 20 or so years ago. Again, I may be wrong about this but, I don't think so and maybe they still do it. I'd appreciate feedback on this. I'd really like to know. Also, it's still possible the whale actually starved to death.

Why is it assumed the whale ate the garbage in Pukit Sound ? Where did the whale com from? As one poster pointed out there are many garbage fields in the ocean. There are also many countries whose ships ply the ocean who don't share the same values as you ,and just throw stuff over board including human waste while at sea.

"mrcrowlwy" you are full of it! The average Joe in his little Bayliner cruising around on his weekend trip is polluting far more than any commercial fisherman. Throwing his leftover lunch, wrappers, beer cans and such over the side. Going so fast that his sweat pants flies overboard.

It's man's fault...we're killing everything. Let's go back to wearing loincloths and trading seashells.

It is still "legal" to dump as much trash as you want in the ocean. Ask your local commercial fisherman. Just stuff it in a 55 gallon drum, seal it, and dump it over the side. There is even a handy chart that has the numerous zones of what and how far away from land you must be to "legally" dump straight in the resource providing your living. Fact.

It's sad that it takes a catastrophe to bring natural disaster to the forefront of our minds. There is no one to blame in this pollution and it will always be that way. Isn't it sad to know that every single one of us is guilty? Just because you don't throw it directly into the ocean, doesn't mean it won't end up there. IF you can make the effort and take the time, burn the calories, and recycle. Dispose of things CORRECTLY, you brighten our chances. Though the ice caps are melting, it only takes one person to make a difference, right?

This sounds to fishy... I wouldn't put it past someone to be poisoning and injecting trash into their stomach before they out of nowhere float into Puget Sound..

This is indeed is sad but, it shows what man is doing to our oceans. The plastic has just got to go. It wouldn't hurt people to buy shopping bags that can be reused over and over and demand that plastic be removed from products that easily can be converted to glass or paper. As an example; the gallon jug of milk and water bottles. Both of these can be recycled back into use. That alone would be a great starting point and save billions of dollars and, most importantly our sea life. Our fish eat these things and then, WE eat the fish so, we'd be saving ourselves too. People, sadly have a mentality that says out of site, out of mind. They should consider the future generations. They should think about their children. They should think about their childrens children. They should just think.
