FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. -- A fatal fire in Friday Harbor over the weekend turned into a homicide investigation Thursday.
Detectives combed through the burned out house of Sharon Hammel, who firefighters found dead in her bedroom early Sunday morning.
Medical examiners revealed Hammel did not die as a result of the fire, but multiple stab wounds.
A juvenile suspect was arrested, according to San Juan County Sheriff Rob Nou.
"We were able to develop enough information that led to the identification and arrest of a 15-year-old male suspect," said Nou.
Although they will not identify the suspect, police said Hammel's teenage son was in the home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed.
A 20-year-old man was also living in the home at the time of the fire. He also escaped unharmed, but Nou said he is not a person of interest.
As a city worker, Hammel was responsible for many of the colorful gardens and flower boxes around Friday Harbor.
