SEATTLE - KING 5 News has learned Monfort is now being investigated on child pornography charges. Investigators say they found massive amounts of child pornography on Monfort's computer.

KING 5 News also now knows the exact content of one of two notes left at the scene of the police car bombings on October 22. Law enforcement sources tell us they believe Monfort wrote the notes, assuming police officers would die when the cars exploded. The author says he's blowing up the cars and killing police as a "tribute" to a sheriff's deputy trainee - Travis Bruner - who witnessed the beating of a girl in a holding cell by another King County deputy.

The note says: "These deaths are dedicated to Deputy Travis Bruner. You swear on a solemn oath to protect us from all harm, that includes you. Start policing each other or get ready to attend a lot of police funerals."

Bruner was suspended for five days. The other deputy has been fired and is awaiting trial on assault.

Seattle Police say the DNA of the suspect in the Oct. 31 murder of Seattle Police Officer Tim Brenton was found at both the murder scene and the scene of a firebombing of several police vehicles on Oct. 22.

Police say they are certain they have the car, a Datsun 210, and the gun, an assault rifle hobbled together from different parts, that their only suspect, Christopher Monfort, used to gun down Officer Tim Brenton.

"We've determined through the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab that the assault rifle found in the apartment is an identical ballistic match to bullet fragments taken from the scene October 31st that killed Officer Brenton and almost killed Officer Sweeney," Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said at a Monday news conference.

At Monday's press conference, police released photos of the car and a rifle.

Monfort was shot by detectives in the parking lot of his suburban Tukwila apartment complex on Friday. The detectives were pursuing a tip that a car at the complex matched the description of a vehicle seen nearby when officer Timothy Brenton was killed.

Authorities say the detectives opened fire after Monfort pulled a handgun.

Brenton was sitting in a car Oct. 31 with rookie Officer Britt Sweeney following a traffic stop when he was shot and killed. Sweeney was grazed in the neck.

Pugel said evidence recovered from Monfort's Datsun 210 revealed that the car was struck by at least one of Officer Sweeney's bullets fired from her service weapon during the incident.

Pugel said it's believed that a fire in the mobile precinct was the "bait" to get officers to the scene. When responding officers were approaching the fire scene, two patrol cars exploded in flames.

"The fact that he had the diversion of fire to bring them in to be killed by the secondary device on the patrol car led us to believe he meant to kill someone there," said Pugel.

But police say they do not have a motive for the shooting or the bombing of the police cars at the city garage.

Police confirmed that Monfort was a security guard, but had recently lost his job, though it's not known why, and police say they have no record of him ever applying for a job with the Seattle Police Dept.

Monfort had no serious criminal history, but he was stopped by police on Oct 15, driving not far from where Officer Brenton was murdered.

When Monfort was pulled over for not signaling a turn, he refused to answer officer's questions. He ultimately was only cited for expired insurance.

Police are convinced Monfort was planning more attacks. In his apartment and storage shed they found homemade bombs, some packed with nails as shrapnel.

"Everything here makes me believe that he was going to cause harm to someone else," said Pugel.

A judge has given authorization to prosecutors to file charges of aggravated first degree murder and attempted first degree murder against Monfort.

Monfort's lawyers are now public defenders, who went to court this afternoon because they've been unable to speak to Monfort.

The attorneys said that not only do they believe their client is in trouble, but that the police are not allowing him his rights.

"You have a person who's medicated, who's very suggestible, who's probably very devastated, who's incredibly isolated, who may believe that his family has turned their back, that he has no attorney. And a bunch of officers are standing around him and he doesn't know who shot him, but he knows it's a police officer. Don't you think it's a fairly decent policy to stand around and wait until he says something incriminating? I think that's what this is all about," said attorney Julie Lawry.

Prosecutors said they weren't in charge because it was a police operation and they had no authorization to let defense attorneys in, but now they will clear the way.

Lawry said she had spoken to Monfort's family, and that they want everyone to know that their thoughts and sorrow are with the family of Officer Brenton.

Monfort remains hospitalized in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center.

It looks like our fine Justice system is taking this one a little more serious than the monsterous Tuba Man killing. No bias here!

Will lthe person who blew the whistle on him be collecting the large reward offered for his capture. No mention of this in the news yet. Who ever it was deserves it. I will be waiting to hear the outcome of the offered reward? I wonder if he will even recover from his wounds enough for justice to be done? I hope so. This if so horrible.

I agree that if the evidence is there that the suspect should be tried and hopefully convicted. It looks like SPD has their man. That said, I do not understand why his mother is unable to visit wtih him. Even if he was in King County jail she would have visiting times and days. This investigation needs to be by the book so that there are no loopholes.

Why do people always have to have something to whine about when it comes to stuff like this? Shut the heck up and deal with it people, life isn't perfect but they at least got the right guy and stopped this guy who turned into a monster from doing far worse.

jlake said on November 9, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Any attorney that is going to try to defend Monfort, will be taking it on for publicity. SPD did a fantastic job obtaining evidence. The only step that Monfort can do is to plead GUILTY to reduce cost and to protect humiliation to his mother.

Only if the officers aimed a little more to the left..., they've been pretty accurate this year on other people; like the kid during new years they TRIED to portray as a Nazi before they found out he was a beloved member of the community, or the drunk guy who's car lunged forward while being tazed in Everett, or the unarmed person on the Eastside... so much accuracy, then we have a guy who most likely did the crimes above and is sitting in a hospital in serious condition... Just my opinion of thought.

victimsjustice said on November 9, 2009 at 7:21 PM

Becsrs - you've got the right idea. If Officer Brentons dad doesn't want the 5 minutes I'm sure plenty of others would take them. That cowardly piece of unwanted carrion doesn't deserve any better. Hey, someone in the hospital turn off his drip machine so he doesn't get any pain medication through his IV. He needs to feel the PAIN. Whaddya say Seattle???!!!!

I would love to see the police take as much effort into finding a person who kills innocent civilians, or kidnaps children as they take when one of their own is killed...I would also love to see parades and cavalcades big news stories, where the community morns, a innocent civilians death....When the wife of the chief of police of Tacoma was gunned down in daylight while her kids watched, by her husband the chief of police, where was all the news coverage, the accolades the drama, the parade for the wife who was innocently gunned down by her husband the chief...As far as I understand police officers get paid and paid well to protect and serve the citizens who pay for their services...All I see is a para military group of power mongers with huge ego bully issues who target innocent citizens on petty issues, ignore huge issues, rarely ever put themselves in danger, shoot first ask questions later who I am suppose to idolize and support...Well I don't...

victimsjustice said on November 9, 2009 at 7:43 PM

Hey Rational. COPS pay taxes too. What do YOU do for a living? Law enforcement people are family. Plain and simple. So if you hurt one of their own, you hurt them all. And they ALL will want to find the one who hurt a member of their family. It's human nature to look out for your own. Trust me Rational, no one, least of all the police, care if you idolize or support them. There are plenty of good people who respect the authority the police represent obey the laws, and support those who enforce those laws. Whatsamatter, you get a parking ticket recently?

heyler7 said on November 9, 2009 at 7:55 PM

When do we get to see an interview with this crazy guy's family? Do they have all these great stories on how he couldn't have done this?

acitizen said on November 9, 2009 at 8:15 PM

sounds like part of his motive may have been the earlier case of a police officer beating up a teenage girl while she was in custody. Wonder how that officer feels now! At least that bad apple was fired, hopefully he'll be found guilty of assault on a minor. Police need to know that they are held to higher standards, EVERYTHING they do can have a reaction as we now see.

How could this guy have an arts degree as well as law enforcement traininng and be dumb enough to leave DNA evidence at both crime seens? How could he be dumb enough to park the 210 at home? Why did'nt the Gun go off that he pointed at the officer? I think this guy has a death wish. In sentencing, I hope he never smells fresh air ever again. I hope the state can set an example for my children that supports the notion "killing is wrong". This example must be as simple as white or black. If it isn't, the killing will never stop.

As someone who has witnessed first hand police brutality, lies, & officers purjuring theselves in court & on stand & was able to prove innocents as liars ---in no way can i say this is a setup or a bad investigation. Every camera is ON this particular investigation. When the media is at it's highest ratings (& November is a rating sweep month) --Throw in a $105,000 "reward" --CHEAP MONEY, a small price to pay,as compared to a huge investigation the old fashioned way of doing things.\ No doubt, bad cops, from cities like Lynnwood, & their facsimilies, are mesmerized. I mean... Seattle didn't hire them EITHER, so they had to settle to these small pathetic suburb towns ...to do their dirty work. And, they do.

bearwins1 said on November 10, 2009 at 5:03 AM

the only thing i agree with on with this nut job that shot the cop is that the police really need to police each other more , i'm sure there are good cops out there , i've yet to meet one ? but i am sure there would be more if they would police each other more .

gritz said on November 10, 2009 at 9:47 AM

Death mask - You speak that you know the military, but you dont. The military cannot search anyone's home or room with out probable cause. The can search during a company health and welfare search or an announced inspection. But not a particular room of suspect. Since this information of the Majors involvement or premise that he was trying to contact Al-Queda wasn't not privy to the Military, there was no reason to conduct a search. I am continually amazed at the lack of knowledge that some of you bloggers have. You voice your view points as a matter of fact, even though you have zero quantitative sources to back you statements. Your first instinct is to point fingers and blame others for everything that happens locally as well as nationally. Sometimes crazy people do crazy things. Their acts have nothing to do with political or religious reasoning. What is also crazy? Blaming everything on your political enemies.

When someone attacks the Police, they are attacking more than that particular police officer. They are attacking the fundamentals of our society. We, as a culture, cannot allow the systematic destruction of our justice system and the people who put their lives on the line in order to protect that system. Doing so would be another step backwards in our evolution as a civil society.Regardless, how you feel about your police department, they supply the needed stability to our way of life; and without that support, we as a society, would be doomed. I think some of you who write stuff just to get a rise out of others. Then there are some, I'm not so sure about. Some of you, need your meds.

The last I heard, John Henry Browne, was his attorney, now this says he has a public defender. Mr. Browne is no "public defender", so perhaps his parents decided they couldn't/wouldn't afford the big bucks for Mr. Browne. I wouldn't blame them, they helped him get through school, go to a trade school, get a degree from University of Washington, and then he repays them by shooting a cop. I too wouldn't let him further drain my pocketbook. He has little chance of anything but life in prison, or the death penalty, so why pay for a high-priced attorney to get the same thing.

thorshammer said on November 10, 2009 at 4:39 PM

It just helps us to remember why we NEED the police! He'll go get some more meth and be gone. The only reason he will stick around is if he thinks he can get a rise out of someone. Being a "defense attorney" doesn't mean Julie Lawry doesn't think Christopher Monfort isn't guilty, it means she wants to see that Monfort receives a fair trial, and is afforded all the rights that all of us would like should we be in a position to need a defense attorney. Such as being able to get into his hospital room. She wants the prosecution to have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, or whatever the "standard" being applied, that Monfort did it. It's a system of checks and balances, there should rightfully be a heavy burden on the prosecution to prove Monfort did this. What other cases get rush DNA checking? Do they rush any DNA checks on rape cases? I constantly hear about rape kits waiting to checked for DNA, that are 3 years old or more. In Los Angeles, rape kits sit 7-8 years because DNA testing is expensive. But when it's a cop, we all know what happens. That is if something is done to a cop, if it's the other way around forget it, the back burner is just fine.
