VASHON ISLAND, Wash. -- A state ferry worker is in hot water accused of road rage that started with a food fight -- and it was all caught on camera.
The alleged victim, Tom Schiller, commutes to Seattle everyday from Vashon Island. But it's what happened before he boarded that's got a ferry worker in trouble for giving him a piece of his mind and his breakfast.
Schiller says this all started months ago. Everyday he'd see the same white Honda speeding through downtown Vashon passing cars going close to 50 mph. Schiller was fed up.
“I thought well, I should record this,” he said.
The video shows a man get out of his car, approach the victim with a cream cheese Danish pastry in his hand. He proceeds to smear it on the man’s windshield while sharing a some choice words before he gets back in his car and takes off.
“He’s chewing on it walking toward his car. At that point he starts smearing his Danish all over my windshield, and I’m just like, ‘Yeah, alright. Good for you,’” he said.
After the unorthodox Danish delivery, the driver takes off. Schiller tracks his speed while trying to clear the smear. They arrive at the Vashon ferry terminal where Tom starts rolling again.
“He’s asking me to step out of the car, that he wants to speak to me and just starts calling me names like, ‘C’mon babyface, let’s do this like adults,’” Schiller recalled.
Turns out the man with a temper when it comes to transportation works for the Department of Transportation, directing traffic on the very ferry route Schiller takes everyday.
“And here’s the gentleman with his ferry coat on, says Washington State Ferries across the back and he’s looking at me and he stops for a second and he’s like, ‘Oh.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s where I know you from,’” said Schiller.
The man didn't want to talk to KING 5 News about his driving or his Danish.
WSDOT confirms the man does work for the state ferry system. He was not on official duty when all of this went down but they have placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
