REDMOND, Wash. - A mother could only watch in agony as her four young children and their father were killed by an apartment fire that broke out early Saturday morning, said witnesses.

Neighbor Jared Wilson said the 30-year-old woman was able to escape the two-bedroom ground-floor apartment and stood outside as heavy smoke and flames engulfed her home.

A couple identifying themselves as close family friends told KING-5 the children were all boys, the youngest 3 years old, the oldest about 10 to12 years old.  The friends said the family had moved to Redmond from Colorado about a year and a half ago to get a "fresh start," they said, after their family business had gone under.

Wilson said he tried to help, but could not get close.

"She couldn't speak -- she was just hysterically screaming," said Wilson, who lives on the building's third floor.

"I'll never forget the mother screaming," said witness Chris Champoux. "At that point everyone was gone, and lost, and she was the only one."

"You've got to understand," said Champoux, who lived in the unit across from the one that caught fire. "We were inside and could feel the heat inside our apartment, the intense heat coming off that building. It melted all the ice snow off every vehicle."

The mother was taken to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, where police said she was in stable condition.

"You could tell she'd been in a lot of heat and smoke. Her face was black from the soot and singed and she was trying to pull the IV's and oxygen off and they were trying to hold her. It was sad to see," said Mark Wilson.

Apartment resident Jason Diaz said he was heading to bed after attending a New Year's Eve event when he heard a woman scream.

"I heard someone screaming and a boom and then another scream again and hearing like crunchy, like fire," he said

Neighbor Steve Longmire said he also ran to help, but couldn't get close because of the heat.

In a video he later recorded as the flames continued to burn the apartment, you can hear him crying while saying, "Oh my God... It became too engulfed to go in and rescue the kids."

Longmire shared the video, he said, hoping it can "compel families to create emergency plans," he said.

The two-alarm response included firefighters from Bellevue, Eastside Fire, Kirkland, Redmond, and Woodinville.

Lt. Tim Gately said the fire was reported at about 2:30 a.m. He said when firefighters arrived they found flames visible from all four stories of the apartment building.

Gately said firefighters had some difficulties fighting the fire.

"There are steep hills leading into the apartment complex and obviously once Fire starts adding water it runs downhill and can create some slippery conditions," he said.

Gately said there are no sprinklers in the building, but it appears that smoke detectors were present.

No other injuries were reported. Residents of 12 apartments had to evacuate.  They were either put up in hotels for the night or staying with relatives and friends.

Redmond Fire Investigators are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire. Redmond Police Detectives, the ATF, the WSP Crime Laboratory, and a Seattle Police accelerant detection canine unit are assisting with the investigation.  A Redmond Police spokesman said outside agencies were merely offering their services, and that their involvement does not imply a malicious cause.  Rather, they said at this point, they have not found anything they consider "suspicious," said Matt Peringer.

Investigators wrapped up for the day around 5pm, placing police to safeguard the scene overnight.  They said they expected to be back inside the building in the morning.

I think that you might be amazed how fast a fire can spread, especially at this time of the year. Heating systems are on and the inside of homes are tinder boxes. This unfortunate family may have still had their tree up from the holidays, and that may have accelerated the fire. A couple of seconds can make the difference and a fast spreading fire can stop the most motivated rescue attempt. To Jayemdup's question about why all of the agencies in the investigation is a good question. The basic answer is that the crime scene, detective, and fire investigators conduct investigations on any fatality fire until a cause is determined. The different agencies just bring different toolboxes to the task. The ATF responds to any commercial fire with a certain level of fire loss. (Not sure of the $$ number there). This makes for a thorough investigation. My deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and those relocated due to the damage.

Fire, unless used with a propellant, does not spread too quick, atleast slow enough for you too be able to get to safety after you initially smell or see smoke or flames. It is hard to imagine what went on really, the family must have been dead asleep and woken up right before the apartment was ungulfed or something.. what makes the most sense to me is some kind of explosion that ungulfed the family instantly, not allowing them to get out, 5 people stuck in an apartment fire.. seems suspicious to me.. The apartment was also on the bottom floor, so risking injury or death from jumping from a window was not a factor in this situation. very suspicious, I do not think that his could have been an accident. Bless this tragedy and the people involved with the necessary energy to get through it and look up.

@knittermom, are you one of those people who always tries to put words in other people's mouths? I did not even imply that she did not try. I said what I would have done in the situation, not anything about what she did. Learn to read.

Slappywag, she tried desperately to get back in there. The firefighters had to sedate her at the scene before she was taken to the hospital because she was fighting them so hard to get back in to her babies.

You get what you pay for, oreo10. Everything costs money. If you make a $125,000 home the minimum standard for comfort and safety, then you condemn everyone who cannot afford to rent or buy a $125,000 home to living under a bridge, or worse. KING5 loves to point out that older apartments do not have sprinkler systems. I wonder how many KING5 employees are willing to pay for sprinklers in their own homes? The hypocrisy reeks. Understand this: mandatory sprinkler systems means more homeless children. Nothing is free. Landlords operate on very thin margins in an extremely high risk business. Demanding that they operate at a loss simply means closing down all the money-losing apartments. Then where will people live?

It is more than sad. What could be worse? I am inspired to see that people have compassion for a complete stranger. Too bad people did'nt feel it when that girl was getting beat in the bus tunnel, or when that poor man was laying on the sidewalk after being sucker punched.

This is just a heartbreaking story, I'm so sad for this poor woman and pray she can go on. I don't think I could. Just terrible. I can't even imagine what she is going through. So sad.

Wow. This is sad. I truly hope that the explosions were not a meth lab or some other such illegal activity. I could not imagine this ever happening to my family. I would probably lose my life trying to save my family, since I would have gone in, no matter the circumstances. I would gladly get burned so they could live.

I had the unfortunate experience of living in this run down residence for a short time, after moving here from another state. I am not surprised this type of disaster happened there, It was very poorly maintained. What a tragedy. Apartment owners should be held to a higher standard. There seems to be a lack of inspections and lax safety requirements.

Skiergirl: I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to imply by saying " it is obvious this was not just a simple apt/home fire" but up until this point there is nothing that indicates it was anything but. It is common when a fire of this magnitude (that does a significant amount of $$$ property damage or has fatalities) that outside and federal agencies are brought in as a precaution to assist in the investigation.

I live just down the street from this complex. The scene was so surreal all day. There were about 10 fire engines there, a few medics and only one police car. Their engines were all quiet and once the sun came up, their lights went quiet as well. All day the silence was disturbing, no one knew anything. But something just did not seem right. I talked to the reporters from both KING and KOMO, but they didn't know much yet either. We were all in shock, it just seemed unreal. As the details have come out, it is obvious this was not just a simple apt/home fire. I think we will learn more in the days to come. Regardless, my heart breaks for the wife and mother, her friends and family. This is a horrible tragedy. When did you last check your fire detector? I'm sure it is fine but when did you last check it? Why don't you go check now. God Bless.

I hear of so many apt. fires that I never want to live in one. Especially ones that have many stories in them that make it near impossible for people to escape. My heart just goes out to this woman. It must be over the top devastaing. If she EVER can get over it. I don't think I could. I have 6 kids and can't imagine life without any of them. ONLY GOD can give her the peace that passes ALL UNDERSTANDING and heal her from this tragedy. My prayers go out to her to that end.

Oh my gosh. I have 4 kids and I can't imagine the pain of losing one of them let alone all 4. It sounds like she lost her husband, too. How absolutely horrific. I hope she pulls through this.

I lived through a fire and got my 2 children and husband out and I thought that was the worst thing that could happen. But, this is just so terrible for the woman left behind. I can't imagine the pain and suffering that she is going through. It took me YEARS to get over the horror of my fire but HER Pain is just incomprehensible! So sorry for her and what family she has left. So sad!
