SEATTLE -- University of Washington Professor Joe Sisneros said he and graduate student Ashwin Bhandiwad spent Thursday night making recordings of various sounds along the Duwamish Waterway, looking for an answer to what is causing the mystery hum being heard in parts of West Seattle.
At the end of the night, they had no conclusive proof that the eerie growl is man-made or something from nature.
Sisneros said they recorded the sounds at a local concrete plant and compared it to the sound the male Midshipman fish makes while courting females. The mating call and the crushing operation seem to have the same acoustic properties.
The two experts checked out areas listed on the West Seattle Blog where people said the noise could be heard, but they said they didn't hear either the cement plant or the fish.
So the mystery continues. Fortunately, many are reporting the hum has stopped. For now ...
