For the first time ever, the Washington Supreme Court has a Justice with Mexican heritage.

Steven C. Gonzalez was sworn in as the state’s newest justice Monday morning. Gonzalez, a former King County Superior Court Judge, was appointed by Governor Christine Gregoire in November and is the first Mexican-American to serve on the bench since its formation in 1889.

“Thank you all for helping to make this day so special,” he told an audience of a few hundred people who attended the swearing-in ceremony in Hall of Justice.

“I hope to stay here for a very long time,” he joked.

The Washington Supreme Court isn’t exactly known for its ethnic diversity.  Of all 94 justices to have served only Justice Charles Z. Smith was non-white. Smith’s mother was African American and his father, a Cuban man. Smith served from 1988-2002.

“I'm really excited that the governor has listened to the minority groups in Washington who have said its time,” said Chief Justice Barbara Madsen. “I think he (Gonzalez) will have a perspective the rest of us don’t have. He will bring a sensitivity.”

Gonzalez’ mother Joanne, wife Michelle and several members of the Gonzalez family were also at the ceremony.

“I challenge anyone to be more proud of him than me,” said Joanne Gonzalez.  “He may have had to work harder to get here, but he did it.”

Gonzalez will be forced to run for election in November.

González was first appointed as a judge to the King County Superior Court bench in March 2002 and voters elected him that fall. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2008.

From 1997 to 2002, González was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the state's Western District. He served on the Board of Directors of El Centro de la Raza and on the steering committee of the Northwest Minority Job Fair. Before becoming a judge, he volunteered as a pro bono attorney for the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project.

González earned his J.D. from the University of California at Berkley's law school and was admitted to the Washington state bar in 1991

arctic- unfortunately these labels are place upon us by our appearance, last names, religious affiliations etc... and quite frankly, the most convenient to discriminate against. For instance, one could conclude by your and others statement that you are blaming the victim for the racism. "If they weren't so brown then racism wouldn't exist!" And suedale? Would you consider President Obama to be white? I am both white and native. I look native, not white. Yet many circles would not accept me as white. Racism exists. Fortunately most of us are not racists, but it does no good to look the other way or pretend it doesn't exist. Historical? Being American is great, but don't be beige about it. It's okay to embrace your lineage. We are not beige, we are a country of much variety, differences and colors. That is what makes us great. Washing solves nothing.

savvydude2003 - you are partially right. Hard to explain...but I will try. My mom is black, my dad is white. Growing up I did not think it odd, I thought of both of them as my parents. Color was not important to me until I started junior high. I am brown...olive colored with straight black hair. Growing up and still to this day I am asked if am originally from Italy. Itialians think I am... I have 3 older sisters. Oldest looks black, next one looks white and 3rd one (2 years older than me) is mistaken for a Latina girl. Since all 4 of us had same black mother and same white father are we African-American? Are we white? What are we. I can tell you I am an American...period. My two oldest sisters (Black and white) have had the hardest time because both have experienced vicious racism growing up from both whites and blacks. None of us have been to Africa so we are not African Americans. A few mean people called half breeds. Every race has a few racist people. Majority are not racist.

intrepid1 - again the point is....Obama is not an African American, he is half black and half white. But why is the black part so much more important than the white part, because to call a man who is half white and half black an African American is in itself racist.

When are we gonna stop this "?"-American stuff? We are not suppose to see race but we continually emphasize it whenever anyone other than a white male or female achieves anything. Do we make a big deal out of the first German, Irish, French, Asian, Scottish, Swedish....etc American achieving anything? Nope... cause yah' see that would be racist. You see it all the time you can have a Hispanic this, a African american that, but if it refers to being white you are a racist. If you are proud of being Caucasian you are a racist... I am not a racist but a sure get sick of having everyone else being able to say the are a proud Hispanic-american, proud African america, but if you say proud Caucasian? RACIST! NAZI !! ...pffft''~ Such a bunch of dribble.

The only thing that matters is that he do his job without being biased. If he can manage that then he deserves his position. If not, then don't vote him back in. Who really cares what his ethnic ground is... Just like the president being black, who cares? What's important is that we all know that he sucks and that he shouldn't be reelected.

"“I think he (Gonzalez) will have a perspective the rest of us don’t have. He will bring a sensitivity.” Does that mean he will give love to illegal aliens, and make us care for them?

Its racism,,, ethnic groups want to be treated fair but always "celebrate" when they do something. I wonder what would happen if we had white history month or the white entertainment channel. Enough already,, whoopdeeedooo hes Hispanic,,, is he a good judge is all I care about.

@suedale: Because there's no under-representation of European-American's holding office in this or other States. What's wrong with celebrating this? It's a historical milestone... like having the 1st African-American President has been. It diminishes you not one iota to have someone else recognized. Your protestation speaks more to your own insecurities and biases than raises any real issue. However, given the ethnic diversity of the State, one SHOULD expect a similar proportional distribution within our Supreme Court, Legislature and other government offices. It's a sorry state of affairs.

Why don't they make such a big deal about Irish-Americans or French-Americans or British-Americans??? Nothing like helping to keep the can of worms open that create racism. Way to go Washington State!!! If he was born in the United States then quit making him so dog gone special. He's just another AMERICAN like all the rest of us. Maybe you can have a ceremony for me because I am the first Canadian-Irish-French American to complain about this. I'M SICK AND TIRED OF THIS!!! If you want to HELP America, quit segregating us from each other...
