SEATTLE -- An explosion and massive fire that sent two people to the hospital early Monday was caused by a natural gas leak inside a house in the Pinehurst neighborhood.

The explosion severely injured the two people living in the home, Seattle City Light employee David Ingham and his wife Hong Ingham, both in their 50s. Both victims were immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center where Ingham is in satisfactory condition, but Hong remained in serious condition, the hospital said Monday afternoon.

The explosion, which leveled the house and scattered debris for an entire block, happened around 6:00 a.m. at Ingham's house near 123rd Street and NE 5th Avenue. It was so powerful, windows were shattered at nearly every house within a block.

"It felt like maybe it was an earthquake or something," said Claudia Paulson, who lives about a block away.  "I looked out my bedroom window and there was a huge ball of fire."

"There was just this huge impact and everything rattled," said Betty Shapiro, who lives a block and a half away.  "We kind of hit the floor and immediately heard car alarms go off."

"It just shook our whole building. I was shocked to learn how far north this was," said Rob Leland, who lives 20 blocks away. "I thought it was an earthquake."

Fire Department spokesman Kyle Moore said the two victims were inside the home when the blast occurred. One neighbor said after the blast, Ingham came to his house for help.

"He thought he smelled gas last night," said neighbor Evan Gullicson. "He said he thought it was a gas explosion."

Mark Cardenas, who lives near the explosion site, said some neighbors were trapped between the fire and a fence.

"They were looking for a way to get away from their house," he said.  "I put our ladder over the gate and they started carrying kids over the gate."

The blast was strong enough to knock a plate off of a wall at Wes Gallagher's house, hitting him in the head while he slept in a recliner.  He has a big gash on his head but did not need stitches.

Seattle Fire Department investigators said there was a natural gas leak inside the house. The gas ignited when someone flipped on an electrical switch. Fire investigators said Ingham told them he had smelled gas Sunday, but didn't report it to anyone. PSE advised residents who smell gas to report it immediately.

However, a friend of the victims told KING 5 that he spoke with one of the survivors Monday and he said they did not smell gas the night before.

Puget Sound Energy crews shut off gas at the house and were taking meter readings in the area to determine if there were more gas leaks.  PSE said they are not 100 percent sure at this point if everything is safe; 11 nearby residents remain evacuated from their homes.

Fire officials said late Monday that the blast was possibly related to reported gas leaks on Sunday a few blocks away. Homeowners reported smelling gas in the 900 block of 122nd Street. Four homes were evacuated and a PSE crew dug up and fixed a gas line.

PSE officials said one of the gas leaks was caused by someone digging in the area. Seattle fire officials said the other was caused by water erosion.

The fire was visible from Interstate 5 and several 5th and 6th streets were closed from 123rd to 124th streets. About 20-30 homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution; about 11 residents remained displaced.

KING 5's Liza Javier, Jake Whittenberg, Teresa Yuan and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I heard this from N. Edmonds, in the Meadowdale area, which looks to be several miles further than the next furthest report. Sounds from the south really seem to carry to our location - I can hear the sound of trucks late at night and always wondered if it could be from I-5, which is 4-5 miles in that direction. After hearing the 5 second rumble of this morning's blast, I think that must be the case.

Praying for the complete recovery and restoration of this family. Sometimes when there's a gas leak, you can't always tell what it is. I'm sure if he had even thought that's what it was, he'd have reported it.

Lights on, house gone. Now, on the serious side. I hope the best for both of them in their recovery and that they heal quickly from this explosion. This is scary stuff and if you think you smell gas, have it checked out immediately.

We're at 160th and Ashworth and heard/felt a huge boom. House shook, windows rattled...too short a timespan to feel like an earthquake, didn't sound like a crash or transformer explosion...Sorry to hear it involved such devastation and injuries. Well wishes to the two residents in the home.

I live on 127th street & there are several orange vested guys with instruments out on the street. There are PSE trucks & Seattle City Water trucks & about 20 or more people testing, jack hammering etc. We have received no info from them. A couple guys were out there last night with their instruments. This may be a very wide spread problem - more so then they are disclosing. Yesterday there were fire trucks & police road blocks on Roosevelt & 125th & another on NE 8th & 125th. We should be informed - I'm very worried.

I live at 162nd right off 5th AVe NE. I wondered what the sound was. I though it might be thunder, but it wasn't really like thunder. Shook the windows in my house.

The home appears to be a total loss? What home? All I see in the picture is charred debris. Speedy recovery to the couple.

About two years ago I reported a strong gas odor throughout a neighborhood on Mercer Island which had gone on for nearly a year. I begged, coaxed, threatened PSE to correct it before the neighborhood and my mother went up in flames. They gave me every excuse in the book, minimizing my concerns, dismissing the urgency, etc. Finally I threatened to sue them. They sent out a crew and finally took care of it but not without many months of stonewalling gross negligence or even intentional recklessness. These are not accidents.

I felt the pressure wave of the explosion and then heard the sound. I thought it was either gas or a meth lab. It did not sound like apower transformer blowing up. Afterward, emergency vehicles were hading east. I live by Bitterlake.

I live at Bitter Lake about a mile west and didn't hear or feel a thing...I think it's very odd people living in Brier, Alderwood etc heard it and we didn't...

Cursory inspection would prove it wasn't a lab - for one thing, a gas leak leaves the smell of gas post-detonation. I saw 4.5 gallons of ligroine go up n a fairly large trailer, just made a pretty blue flame & the smell of degraded chemicals was pretty unique. From what I've read, this area has had MANY killer gas explosions, but predominantly fires attributed to labs. NOTHING civilian has killed like the petrochemical industry...

Woke up this morning just after 6AM because my house shook very hard twice and there was a loud "Boom" sound. At first like many others, I thought it may have been an earthquake and I prepared myself to grab my daughter and get in a doorway but it had stopped. That's when I turned on King 5 and watched the story unfold. I live only 5-7 blocks (125th and 10th) from the explosion and the force was very strong. Also, about half an hour later I was giving my daughter a bath as we do every morning when I noticed that the water had a yellow-ish brown tint to it, I looked in the toilet and sink water as well and it was the same color. I immediately took my daughter out of the bath and called the Seattle Public Utilities. I can only speculate that the explosion caused some possible damage to a water pipe because I've never seen the water like that before in my house.

I saw your reporter point out screen that were knocked off from the explosion on 5th. The Church on the other side of the fire (8th), back side of course, has a series of damaged windows from the explosion.

155th and Meridian in Shoreline. Maybe a minute after 6AM heard a boom and house shook. Thought someone fell out of the bed. Upon checking on everyone- they were all still asleep. So I had to wonder if a car or truck hit the house or building close by. Crazy to think it was this, but the timing is spot on!

I live a block away and had most of the stuff on some of my shelves fall off them. I spoke to the neighbors, they are ok and the couple in the house made it out and over to their house to wait for fire department and ambulance.

I live across the street from this and we were thrown out of bed just after 6am. The smoke plume was very thick and the fire was up in the trees. now it seems very contained. My husband noticed police activity yesterday and I found an article about a gas leak in our area yesterday, could be related.

We live about 1 mile away at 122nd and Ashworth. We were woken up at just about 6am this morning by a loud bang and the house shaking. I can only guess that the house fire might have been the cause.

I'm up in Lake Forest Park and was trying to eek out those last few minutes of sleep when I heard a large boom, the house shook and the windows rattled. I can only hope no one was home and the neighbors are all ok. Just in case, I'll keep all involve in my prayers today.
