VANCOUVER – A three-alarm fire destroyed Crestline Elementary School in Vancouver early Sunday morning.
Officials said the blaze broke out around 3:17 a.m. at the school on Southeast 7th Street, which quickly ripped through the building rendering it a complete loss.
Firefighters from Vancouver and Portland battled the blaze that burned well into late Sunday morning. One firefighter was reportedly injured and was treated and released.
There were no reports of any other injuries.
Teachers and some 500 students are without a school and district officials said there will be no school on Monday. They will be meeting soon to come up with a long-term plan for getting students back in school.
Firefighters said they were alerted about the fire from an alarm but do not yet know the official cause of the blaze.
Neighbors told KGW they heard children running around the school and others reported hearing fireworks overnight.
Federal, state and local investigators were working to determine the cause of the blaze, but could not enter Sunday because the building was too hot.
While officials work to determine where students will continue their school year, others are stepping up to replace some of the lost school supplies.
Donation being collected
The community is already banding together to help those affected by Sunday’s fire at Crestline Elementary.
Officials with the Evergreen School District said the most helpful way to contribute is to make a cash donation with the school's foundation, a non-profit linked with the district.

Friends of Fire Station 6 has partnered with Additional Self Storage and is also collecting and distributing school supplies.
The Burgerville restaurants at Cascade Park and Fisher’s Landing in Vancouver will also be accepting cash donations and school supplies. The restaurants are also planning a community fundraiser at both locations in the days to come to raise money to benefit the school.
School supplies needed include: copy paper, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, erasers, water color paints, tissues, glue sticks, hand sanitizer, playground equipment, markers, dry erase markers, wide ruled notebook filler paper and wide ruled composition books.
