TACOMA, Wash. - Fire officials say a two-alarm fire that caused significant damage to the landmark pagoda building at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma Friday morning is suspicious.

Fire Department spokesman Joe Meineck said firefighters were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m. after a park employee discovered the fire. When firefighters arrived, they called a second alarm.

The pagoda in the park's Japanese garden was built in 1914 and is a replica of a 17th Century Japanese lodge. It accommodated up to 200 people for weddings, memorial services and parties.

One man arrived at the pagoda saying his sister was to be married there in the evening.

"My sister's wedding is today at 6 (p.m.). My mom sent me down here to talk to the Metro people to see what we can do," the man said.

The wedding was relocated to the Point Defiance Zoo and is scheduled as planned for Friday evening, said park officials.

Workers said there have been arson problems in the park.  Recently some garbage cans were set on fire. Investigators, however, are still searching for a cause of the fire.

Metro Parks Tacoma says it plans to restore the building as soon as possible.

"IF" this (as I am betting it will) does turn out to be arson. I hope the POS that lite it burns themselves beyond saving and dies a horribly painful slow excruciating death! I have a personal reason for being so harsh...An Arsonist MURDERED my mother-in-law in Puyallup, I want every arsonist to die like she did, in horrible pain, slowly...

it's a beautiful building and a great park. i really hope they find the person responsible if it was arson. in an earlier article it said there have been some suspected arsons in the park recently... they really need to find the person(s) doing this.

As if the Japanese people haven't already been put through enough, now this... If someone set this fire intentionally, they should be hunted down with hunting dogs and torched while they are in bed. Block the doors and nail the windows shut. They like to play with fire, give the some fire to play with!!!

So sad... Married to my perfect wife in that building on a very happy day 22 years ago. I dearly hope that my home town of Tacoma can afford the repairs so that we may cherish this site in the future.

Very sad, hopefully it can be saved. Lots of good times in that Pagoda, it was great place for receptions.

Well, it appears somebody didn't approve of the wedding tonight?! There are more traditional ways if you must object to somebody getting married.

Why would anyone want to burn down such a beautiful building? No one appreciates what we have. I hope they catch the arsonist and that such a great old building can be restored. Good lick to the couple getting married. I hope you can find a place at such short notice.
