BELLINGHAM, Wash. -  There were no injuries in a two-alarm fire that destroyed three century-old buildings in downtown Bellingham.

The fire broke out about 2:30 a.m. Monday and spread quickly through the vacant wooden buildings in the Old Town area. It was still burning at dawn.

Fire Chief Bill Boyd said firefighters were unable to enter and the buildings turned into a bonfire.

Antique dealer Sharon Elton, who has a shop adjacent to the fire scene, said she got a call at about 2:30 a.m. that the "whole area was on fire."

"It was horrific, we saw the first building crash down," she said. "It was quite frightening."

Elton said the buildings have been vacant for about a year.

"They are abandoned, so they are, unfortunately, ripe for something like this to happen," said Teri Krantz, also an antique dealer.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and an investigation will take days. Transients may have been staying in the buildings.

The buildings on the south side of West Holly Street at West Champion Street had housed an antique shop, furniture store and another retail business.

Actually missp, it IS the author's fault for not emphasizing that the three buildings, up to a century old, were destroyed by fire. The way the story is told, kind of implies the buildings ARE three centuries old and can be interpreted wrongly because of that.

For me, the oldest house for me to live in is ten year old house. Living in an older house is just too gross.

Didn't know the white man was around these parts of the states enough to build a large building.

Verbiage on this one sucks. OR, sucketh... it leads the reader to believe that more than 1 building that is 3 centuries old burned down. But we know that not to be possible here, unless the buildings were longhouses and none of those have been preserved. King5, please hire some decent proofreaders!

Ah, that makes more sense. Good for you. But syntactically, my reading is not incorrect. A clearer headline would have been “Fire burns 3 One Hundred year old buildings.”

mountdana: You are reading it incorrectly. "There are no reports of injuries in a two-alarm fire that has destroyed three century-old buildings in downtown Bellingham." What the author is saying is that there were THREE buildings destroyed and that they were a century old.

If the building is three centuries old, that means it was build in the early 1700's. That is completely impossible. Capt. James Cook didn't even arrive in the Strait of Juan DeFuca until 1778. Capt. George Vancouver visited the area of Bellingham Bay (which he named) in 1792. The first white settlers didn't arrive until *1854*! The authour didn't even THINK about what they were saying.
