OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington state Legislature will likely head into a special session that will cost taxpayers $18,000 per day.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane says it's "doubtful" legislators can wrap up the session by Thursday night's midnight deadline.

The Senate and House are finalizing a budget and a tax plan to help balance it. The Senate prefers a sales tax. The House is looking at eliminating exemptions for items like bottled water and candy.

"We're still in negotiations on both a revenue package and what the budget should look like," said Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle. While no one wants to go into overtime, Murray says no one wants to rush anything through either. "I don't think the citizens of this state want us to come back in June or September. They want us to stay here a few more days and get it done and get it right."

Every day the Legislature is in session costs taxpayers an estimated $18,000. That covers food and lodging for lawmakers. It pays for extra security at the Capitol and for the staff who only work when the Legislature is in session.

But, Republicans say delaying budget cuts could end up costing the state millions in potential savings.

"If we wait a week or a month to implement savings, that's a moment we can't capture," said Sen. Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville.

Sen. Margarita Prentice, D-Renton, said it's "aggravating" to think about going into a special session, but Prentice said lawmakers are having a hard time balancing the budget.

"The situation we're in is certainly the worst I've ever seen. This is my 22nd year here," said Prentice. She thinks it's possible to have something done by next week. "That would be great. I have to have a tooth extraction. That would be more fun than being here."

Several Republican senators sponsored a bill Wednesday to prevent any legislator from collecting the "per diem" they would get for expenses during a special session, which is $90 a day. It's unknown whether Democrats will allow that bill to be heard.

There is no way we should be paying them to be over in Olympia eating & drinking in the Green Room. They need to pay us for not doing their jobs. Balance the budget much easier than they lead us to believe 1) Eliminate all travel for all state employees (legislators encluded) ever hear of Webinars. 2) all cars picking them up and dropping them off GONE. 3) Expense accounts GONE 4) private gym - they pay a monthly fee like the rest of us do. 5) Ferry employees travel pay GONE, Either move closer to the place of work or pay your own travel just like the rest of us do. 6) All Bonus pay to upper layer gets paid back to the state. Where in private business do the owners get a bonus when their business is losing money and they also Do Not even get a Paycheck. Lets have our legislators try this on for size instead of having all of us little people pay for their golden living.

@ organdonor "I also realize it is our own fault. We elected these people to office". High five to you. I agree. Chances are we will continue to vote for them too. The public always falls for the cheap tricks the politicians come up with near election time to make us forget about how bad they messed up.

@wittyname, I understand it all adds up. I also realize it is our own fault. We elected these people to office. Finally, to the people griping about them getting paid for not doing their job on time. Well imagine how much work would get done at your place of work if half your co workers disagreed on how to go about getting the job down? Repubs want one thing, dems want another = nothing getting accomplished... Seems like the only time they will work together is when "national security" is at stake.

I think that members of the Legislature should be fined $90 a day, and the money should come out of their own pockets! Dock their pay when they fail to work effectively. Tax payers should not have to pay "stupid taxes" for these clowns that created the budget short fall in the first place by approving projects with billiion dollar price tags in the middle of a major economic down turn.

The taxpayers should not have to pay a $18k a day fee. As a Washington State citizen with a small company, I do not receive a "bonus" for not completing my assignments on time. I would lose my clients and business. In addition, these are the same lawmakers that gave themselves a pay increase while the rest of the state is unemployed, taking paycuts to keep their jobs or not working full time. Also, if these lawmakers do not support education, and if teachers are going to be laid off or let go.......then we should give these lawmakers the DONALD (TRUMP) and tell them. "You're fired". Common sense ppl.....

@ organdonor first add up all the fractions of a cent they are taxing us here and there and becomes a little more significant the amount of money we are giving them. Second, 18K a day because they are not doing their job, If that is okay with you then we should start paying me that much to not do my job. Third, if I am going to see 18K go anywhere it would be into the budget rather than the pockets of these people.

I'm ready to leave Washington because I absolutely refuse to pay taxes to such a corrupt system. I'm ready to leave the US and retire early in another country, while I'm still young. I came to Seattle while it was a fun place to live and make a lot of money, but now it's pretty much a drag. Soon as I can sell all of my properties and raise $1.5 million dollars I am SO freaking out of here!!!

Figures that these idiots can't get anything done in time. And if it's new taxes that are getting delayed, well no complaints here.

Hey now, don't complain. Washington state lawmakers can do as they please. We answer to them. They know what is best for us. Those pesky initiatives can just be brushed aside.

They should have gone home before they reneged on a vote of the people and passed obscene new taxes. We the people would be better off if an earthquake drops the roof on their heads.

Fortunately, our legislators don't draw the overtime our Washington State Ferry workers sometimes do. Sorry, I couldn't resist (and the embarrassed legislators put an end to that after it hit the fan last month).

i agree with blankingout, now they're going to spend $18K a day to do the work they should have done in a reasonable length of time. If the private sector were that inefficent they wouldn't be in busness long......................

The laws they've been proposing sound restrictive and pretty unecessary anyway... they should just stop.
