SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. - State troopers had to shut down part of Interstate 5 after a car crash and fire early Sunday.

It happened just after 3:30 a.m. on northbound I-5 near the Snohomish-Skagit county line.

Troopers say a car somehow rear ended a truck carrying live crabs. It got stuck and was dragged and then caught fire.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital.

No one else was hurt.

The State Patrol said the driver of the car was charged with DUI.

I was traveling approximately 600yards behind the the accident when it happened. The driver of the car had passed me at a good pace, topping 110-115mph. When I crested the next hill I attempted to find his taillights in the distance. In the stretch of I-5 in front of me erupted an orange fireball when he plowed into and under the crab truck, followed by a cascade of bright sparks raining up then back down to the pavement. From my perspective, I could not comprehend what had possibly happened: I though he'd merely blown his engine and tires in the same instance. It wasn't until I gained some ground on the two vehicles that it became clear he had actually rear ended the truck and was lodged underneath it. It is unfortunate that it sometimes takes a person to lose control to see what damage they can cause. I hope the driver prays every day for his life and the life of the people around him

None of our current or future laws will ever stop people from DUI.It will always happen as long as there is booze. If they put interlocks in all cars it might help a little but then people will find another way.

good job WSP, thats real law enforcement, the parking maids in downtown could do that... we need traffic cameras instead of WSP, it will save billions off the state budget...

Too bad a DUI conviction doesn't mean jack.. and with a scumbag attorney, it'll probably get amended to a 'following too closely' charge..and this drunk will out in no time to threaten us all again. I see it all the time.

Take the drivers license, put him in jail for a few years. That way, it will prolong someones life until he gets out of jail.
