SEATTLE -- The family of a slain Seattle officer killed in a brash attack against police earlier this month issued a thank you Thursday to everyone who provided support.
"We do not know most of you by name and it would be impossible to thank each of you individually, but please know we have been deeply touched and humbled by the outpouring of love," said the statement from officer Timothy Brenton's family. "Tim's death has left us with aching hearts, but your prayers and many kindnesses have helped to ease the ache. Again, thank you. Our family has been forever altered."
The Seattle Times reported that the family chose to issue the statement on Thanksgiving to reach as many people as possible.
Brenton's widow, Lisa Brenton, said her two kids will spend the holiday with relatives, but that it remains a challenging time for the family.
"Everybody is grieving in their own ways. The children are certainly grieving pretty significantly, as am I," she said.
Christopher Monfort, 41, of Tukwila was charged with aggravated first-degree murder in the Oct. 31 death of Brenton as the officer sat in his cruiser discussing a traffic stop with a trainee named Britt Sweeney, who was grazed by a bullet.
Days after the shooting, Seattle detectives attempted to question Monfort at his residence in Tukwila, Wash., just south of Seattle. Police say that Monfort then ran from the detectives and tried to use a gun. The detective shot him.
Prosecutors say Monfort waged a "one-man war" against law enforcement starting with the firebombing of four police vehicles.
Monfort remains hospitalized.
