SEATTLE – In the hours after police say Josh Powell killed himself and his two sons in a house explosion in Graham, Wash., there were new revelations that Powell's children were opening up about their mother’s disappearance.

Susan Powell, 28, was reported missing Dec. 7, 2009, after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job in Utah.

Authorities in the couple's hometown of West Valley City, about 10 miles outside Salt Lake City, quickly turned their attention to Josh. He's been the only "person of interest" in the case, but had repeatedly denied any involvement in her disappearance.

Josh told police he went camping with his two children in the hours before his wife's disappearance -- his steadfast alibi.

On Sunday, the lawyer for Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, told the AP the children had started talking to their grandparents about things they remembered from the night their mother vanished.

"They were beginning to verbalize more," said attorney Steve Downing, whose clients had custody of the children. "The oldest boy talked about that they went camping and that Mommy was in the trunk. Mom and Dad got out of the car and Mom disappeared."

West Valley City police chief Buzz Nielsen said the department was convinced Josh murdered Susan. He said there were promising new leads that surfaced recently and that they were concerned about the welfare of the children.

“We had meetings on what strategies we could do to ensure the kids don't go back in that house,” said Nielsen. “This is probably the worst, a father and his two sons. First the wife, the mother of those two boys, then him and his two sons. You know, it's one thing to have him get charged, not charged, and deal with it. But it's evil what he did to his two sons."

Authorities in Utah said they hoped to file criminal charges against Josh by the end of the year.

Susan’s brother-in-law, Kirk Graves, believes the explosion is Josh’s admission of guilt and that he just couldn’t handle it anymore.

“I’m convinced Josh was going to do something like this. I think there are a lot of people looking back and wondering if they could have stopped this. The only person to blame is Josh,” said Graves. “After knowing him for as long as I’ve known him, I get the sense that he really only cared about himself. That’s why he was able to do things he did to Susan and do the things he did yesterday."

Graves said the boys had been traumatized by everything they went through the past few years, but were starting to act more like themselves recently.

“We saw over the last six months or so was a transition with Charlie and Braden, where they were becoming more fun, more vocal. They were acting like little boys again, which we hadn't seen for a while,” said Graves.

Sir_'have no clue what real is' - how long do you want them to wait? It has been over two years. That worked out well, didn't it. Josh Powell was a twisted sick sob that did this all on his own. Nobody else to blame but him.

clothyard? And other people STILL giving Josh the benefit of the doubt? Get over yourselves! The proof of him being an evil psychopath is in what he did yesterday! He doused the house in gasoline, he sent out emails announcing this pathetic murderous act, he waited until his boys ran into the house, and he pushed the social worker out and then blocked the door. He then set the fire. He set out to trap his two kids and murder them. What more proof do any of you need?! Do any of you realize the horrible fate these boys suffered? NO parent except an absolute evil twisted to the core psychopath would sentence their children to suffer such a fate. If he could do this to his own children, then its pretty certain he murdered his wife. He wasn't driven to this by the media, courts or police!

The "Attorney" said? From what I have seen in the past 50 or so years that I have paid attention, what an "attorney" says has no bearing on anything. It is possible that she was dead and in the trunk of the car of course, but because the Family's attorney says so is just so much fluff. I have always been of the opinion that he had killed and disposed of her, however the second option, that she left on her own is still a possibility. The end result of course is sad and sordid, but I suppose over the next six months on each year on the anniversary of her dissapearance and this tragic occurrence, the Seattle media will trot out the entire thing, over and over and over and over ad infinatum.

If you tell a kid enough times what happened, eventually they will believe and repeat it.

I agree with shan people need to stop blaming others for something that a sick minded individual has done. How could an atty, police or anyone predict such an evil act?

Kirk Graves isn't Susan's brother. He's married to Josh's sister.

I really wish people would stop with the blame game. This is no one's fault except for Josh Powell's. Let the family grieve without all these what if's and if only's.

Did the grandparents' attorneys really do all that they could do to protect the children from the monster. Now will they make big money in the millions of dollars of wrongful death suits to come. You allow one rent a nanny to accompany children to the home of a known murderer who was going to get even one way or another. The judge is not without responsibility here too in allowing visitation at the home with just one rent a nanny. This was predictable as the noose closed in on the monster.

That plotting and those "strategies" might have contributed to pushing Josh Powell over the edge. If they would have waited longer, he could have been arrested without this horrible incident. RIP!
