A new KING 5 poll finds 52 percent of registered voters support Tim Eyman’s Initiative 1125, which would put new restrictions on tolling and gas tax revenue.
The initiative would require that tolls be set by the legislature and that tolls collected on a specific road could only be used for that road. The initiative would also limit the use of gas tax money for highway purposes, potentially restricting Sound Transit from using the center lanes of I-90 for light rail.
I-1125 would also prohibit congestion pricing, in which tolls vary during peak and off-peak hours, and it would require that tolls be removed after a road project is paid.
In the KING 5 SurveyUSA poll, 52 percent supported the initiative when asked the actual ballot language, while 24 percent opposed it. A quarter of those polled were unsure.
The poll of 529 registered voters statewide included people with landlines and cell phones and has a margin of +/- 4.3 percent.
The KING 5 poll found the most popular aspect of 1125 is the provision that tolls be removed after a project is paid (75 percent in favor). However, 53 percent said they thought the transportation commission, not the legislature, should set tolls.
