SEATTLE -  A former Army Ranger originally sentenced to 24 years for leading a 2006 military-style Tacoma bank robbery has been given an additional 20 years for assault and trying to hire a hit man to kill a federal prosecutor.

After his sentencing Monday in federal court, 23-year-old Luke E. Sommer faces 44 years in prison. The former Peachland, British Columbia, resident pleaded guilty in January to assault for attacking a robbery co-defendant behind bars and to offering an undercover FBI agent as much as $20,000 to kill an assistant U.S. attorney. The assault victim suffered a minor stab wound.

Sommer was the mastermind behind an Aug. 7, 2006, robbery of a Bank of America branch. The five robbers wore soft body armor to protect themselves in case of a shootout with police. Several carried AK-47 machine guns. They escaped with more than $50,000 but arrests came quickly after a citizen noted the license plate of their car.

That is ridiculous... The guy should be fully exonerated and released immediately. Obviously he was having trouble adjusting to society after traumatic experiences in combat. Give him community service since he didn't actually kill anyone. The hit man didn't kill anyone and he got into a jail house squirmish. Community service is good. He can work as a security guard at a Bank of America branch in Olympia, Washington.

That's what I Hear is the criminals statistically have weak escape plans... or end up telling on themselves, somehow. If I earned 50g's I 'd talk about it. If I stole it I would have to lie about it... for years. I hear these 50yr old men on job sites bragging about how "BAD" they were when they were young. "Now it can be told". This guy is supposed to use his training to stick up for americans who can't or have to make the equipment he needs to stick up for us. He is a freedom fighter... that has to spend his life in prison. Maybe he could have just stuck to the incredible power of being a stolid, sincere man this country really needs.

This psychopath should be GLAD that the State has the foresight to lock him up until he is old. Plenty of time for reflection in The Joint.

"but arrests came quickly after a citizen noted the license plate of their car".. you're kidding.. these meatball idiots didn't think to use a different car for their crime? they should get an extra 20 years for being painfully stupid as well.
