Summertime. For many kids, that means summer camp.
“I like my buddies,” said Jaydon Fry, who’s attending Camp Prov for his fifth straight summer. “I’m seven years old,” he said.
This camp, located at Forest Park in Everett, is different than most camps.
“We have kids with cerebral palsy, some of them, a lot of them have autism,” said Jenna Buzzard, a Camp Prov educator.
Jaydon and his sister, who’s attending for the first time, have a form of dwarfism. Their mom, Ember, says both kids can’t get enough of this camp.
“Are you having fun at camp?” Ember asks her daughter Kalina. Kalina nods, and smiles.
But Jaydon wasn’t smiling when we asked him if he liked the swimming class in the afternoon. He answered us with a roll of his eyes, as if we should have known better to ask THAT question. But he LOVES circle time. He’s memorized all the music, and the moves he needs to make.
Don’t take my word for it. You gotta see him. Check out the video. You’ll see what I mean.
Camp Prov, which is part of Everett’s Providence Medical Center, has been around 14 years. Many camps charge $400 or $500 a week. Most of the parents at Camp Prov. pay only $20. The camp runs until the middle of August.
“They light up when they get to camp,” said Jenna.
Buzzard. I’ll say!
