SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- Public outcry has apparently led to a reprieve for some elk that have been causing problems at the Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Course.  Plans to allow hunters to shoot two elk at the course are on hold.

In the past, the hunting of problem elk was done quietly with very little controversy.  But when word got out that the elk were going to be shot on the Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Course, word spread quickly.  Word spread across a spectrum of social media and the golf course lighting up the phone lines of the local police department and the Washington State Fish and Wildlife Department.

"We got an email that was sent to about 60 people and I think the general consensus was they did not want the elk being shot," said neighbor Rick Pacholski.

And with complaints pouring in, the golf course and the wildlife agency are taking a step back.

"We're pretty much on hold. While I believe the golf is checking with their owners to see where they want to proceed with this," said Sgt. Kim Chandler with the Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The elk herd is no stranger to golf or lethal threats.  The group has learned to make itself at home in an area where cities and towns have gobbled up open space.

"They've learned that this is a pretty good gig we've got going here with nobody to really bother [them] and lots of food," said Pacholski.

Last year around this time, the herd was looking down the barrel of a gun at Mt. Si Golf Club where it was causing similar damage.

Owners of that course ended up solving the problem by installing a large fence around the much smaller course.

That is not a possibility with the sprawling Snoqualmie Ridge Golf Course.

And while many golfers support the hunt because of the expensive damage caused by grazing elk, the opposition continues to grow and for now the only danger facing the herd is from a hook or a slice.

"I think a lot of people are going to really be happy about especially my wife," said Pacholski.

The decision to hunt the elk could change at any time and even if it doesn't it won't mean they won't be hunted.  They just won't be hunted on the course.

Each year hunters shoot several members of the herd and will continue to do so.

Also forgot to mention one clinic with doctors in Issaquah in the 60's..One Pedetrician with a partner and no specialists that was needed for your particular illness and it meant going into Belleuve to get treatment one needed.. I'm sure the old timers miss those days, reflect on what used to be but I also think those old timers left and new residents enjoy the ammenities that wasn't available in the 60's..

@wilsonme..You are comparing apples to oranges when you say someone comes to your house and say "get out, I like your house better than mine and would you just walk away.:" I lived in Mirrormont in the 60's when Issaquah was a small town..Two way main street, Johnny's market where you could charge your groceries and pay later.. Residents of Issaquah had to travel to East Gate or Bellevue to go to the big grocery stores. Johnny's Market was great but didn't have all that was needed for a family. I think one women's dress shop, and one restaurant called Fisano's (sp)? Small movie theatre. 1 gas station.. Then big industry wanted to come into the community, and the residents of Issaquah fought them to no avail..Johnny's was forced to close, I believe at that time it was Safeway that opened up a grocery store, etc. You can't fight city hall and when the big guys run the little guys out of business as it mean progress for the community, more income for the community.

2 points for red jelly. just a point tto make Wild life will go extinct if we don't leave them land too. all living beings need space to live. We as humans monitor and control populations of wild life by hunting. we need to control human population too or we will destroy this planet as we know it.

I live in North Bend and often have bear, elk & cougar in my front yard. For the last 2 years, we have had 2 different bears stay across the street for 2-3 months in the late summer/early fall. I do not believe humans have any higher hierarchy than other animals as we have proven - humans are even more destructive and we even kill each other with poisons & hand grenades and a little more cement please... I choose to live here because I enjoy living alongside these magnificent animals - otherwise I would live in a city. Read Thoreau's "Where I lived & what I lived for". Snoqualmie, Fall City & North Bend have grown and pushed the animals into less space, then we complain that they messed in our yard... Our Yard ? "There behind the glass lies a real blade of grass" ELP Co-Habitate & Co-Exist - We are 1 planet and there are lots of vacancies in the cities for those who dont like the sticks :) Peace Always & All Ways, Carlton

The comments that these animals will starve is so unrealistic. Look out the window see all that green it is food for the Elk. The last time I checked we did not live in a desert. This is not a bison herd of thousands, or sheep that eat grass to such a low level that other animals have difficulty grazing. In some locations large herds stay during hunting season because it is safe. There is one location on Hoods Canal and another near Ellensburg. Hay is brought in to feed the Elk. Other areas do fine with their Elk populations.

Good finally alternatives are being considered. Roosevelt Elk do have natural hunters they are bear, cougers, and wolves. We didn't like the wolves being around and messed up the natural system. Where wolves have been allowed to live the system works. Yellowstone National Park is an example. The Elk population is hunted during Elk season for food with rules. However killing these beautiful animals because golfers are inconvienced is not humane. We are all part of the ecosystem. Paying attention to wildlife and considering their habitats is a smart thing to do. They live around us and with us don't expect them to just go away because someone wants to pay golf.

wilsonme: Elk are not humans and humans are not elk. People come before Elk. And its not as simple as just building a fence. The population has grown to over 400 head.. that is TOOO big for Snoqualmie and NorthBend to sustain. Building a fence will just drive the animals to another populated area.. we need to implement hunting for limited numbers where appropriate so animals have a resustained sense of fear for human beings. They are too big, too numerous and our communities are growing too big to allow them to cohabitate without having accidents and property damage. The Golf Course problem is just a small consequence of mismanagement and is acting as a bait station. I guarantee you that this will continue unless we train the heard that back in the many acres of land controlled by timber companies have is the safest place.

Ok what if I came to your house and said get out because I like your house better then mine? Would you just walk away? These animals have been in this area long before anyone decided to build a golf course. Why was this not taken into consideration before the course was built? Why do humans think they have the right to move into migration areas, near airfields, or down wind of a canning or processing plant then complain because there are animals, noise and smells? Use some common sense folks and tear down some of the already junky homes, factories etc and rebuild instead of taking over more and more of our farms, wetlands, and grazing areas. Once they are all gone how do you propose to feed all the humans? You are going to want those elk around then. Which is more important living or playing? SAVE THE ELK!! Put up a fense, wall or other deterant but do not kill them.

If you go to the Snoqualmie Valley Record (local newspaper) website and do a search for "master hunter" you will find a year old article that discusses the elk in valley. It is an interesting story. I stand corrected that the culling has occurred only over the last three years or so.

I litterally live 1.4 miles from the course.I spend probably 100 days a year hunting elk in WA, ID and CO and have since I was probably 10 years old. I can probably tell you the age of any bull or cow elk just by looking at it. A close friend of mine is a Master Hunter along with his two sons who I often hunt with and whom I get most of my information regarding WDFW's policies regarding special hunts like these. I talk often with the biologist assigned to the 460 Snoqualmie GMU (Game Management Unit).... I think its safe to say I know what I am talking about. But thanks for stirring the pot!

I occasionaly work up in the area and I go right by 2 of the fields that the elk like to hang out in. It's usualy at the time of the morning when they are most likely to be moving around. Those animals are huge. One of my co-workers totaled their full size SUV when one of them hit the front end of it and the elk just wandered off afterwards. The vehicle had to be towed. They are neat to look at and take pictures off but they need to be controlled.

The elk population is too large for the Snoqualmie valley, 400 . These elk are not native to the valley. They have no natural predators. As a result, to control the herd's growth, for years Master Hunters have culled the herd with 10 to 30 elk being shot on private property through out the valley. There are small groups of elk that leave the main herd primarily in the winter. Over the past few years a group of about 20 to 30 elk have ventured up to Snoqualmie Ridge. Prior to this there was no indication they were in the area. There was no prior damage attributable to elk on the course. This year the WDFW decided that of the 10 to 30 elk that will be culled, 2 will be from the Ridge group. They think that might help this group from venturing so far from the main herd. Some say elk are very smart and will make the connection which will result in less damage to the course. They are not shooting more elk because some ventured up to the Ridge.

I can't believe those who put the well being, life of the Elk over human beings! The defense that the Elks were on the land the golf courses are on first is ridiculous. Whose best interest should come first? The Elk or the people? Perhaps the government should pass a law where Elk can be sold to hightest bidders so they can buy an Elk for their very own pet.. They could fence their yard and play with the Elk all the time..Let's see how long they will keep them after the destruction of their yards and having to clean up their Elk Pies! or one of the children annoy the pet Elk and gored.. The Indians were here before us and I don't see all you Elk lovers or our government or people packing their bags and moving to the desert, North Pole to give the Indians back their land.

blackdog6: I bet your home was also at one point a major ranging area for wildlife. If animals started comming back to your backyard or you were swerving around them on your city streets would you continue your stance that you have to put up with them or would you try and relocate them? And I am sorry but yes they ARE hurting people. They are causing large $ of property damage and people are hitting them with their cars. It is the apathetic philosophy to properly manging animals that is causing all of this. There is a happy medium to building a golf course or residential areas and maintaining animals. Stopping hunters from being an integral process in this management is wrong.

I believe that most of the complaints were about how close the golf course was to their houses. People were concerned about safety. That makes sense to me. An elk almost stomped my dog to death 10 feet away from my house. (Our house was built in 1935 on 10 acres - it's not new.) We accept that they are part of the package. Hitting them with a car is very, very dangerous to the people in the car - they dart across roads at night and it's really easy to hit one if you are not super careful - so I'm careful. I'm ok with the hunting and elk management and I also love seeing them on my property. Overpopulation is bad for the elk - killing them because you took their habitat and now you don't like them eating your tulips is kind-of crappy. Elk were native to this area but were over-hunted in the 1800s and the herd disappeared - they were brought back in from Wyoming (in the 30's?) to reestablish the herd. Not sure how much my comment contributed to this tread, but there you go.

I am an animal lover and would NEVER considering killing an animal for sport in any fashion BUT I do understand that hunting is an integral part of herd control and as long as the hunting is done in the proper areas away from residential areas, I'm ok with it. But when it is happening because the elk who are indigenous to the area and were there first are tearing up a GOLF COURSE that was placed in the middle of their ranging pattern are being killed for it, that's wrong. They are not hurting anyone...just eating what they love. This was a good decision. Put up a fence.

WDFW is losers.. Money hungry freaks state employees.. All they have to do is relocate the heard. LOSERS Hire Wyoming cowboys to head um up and move them out..........

RealWorld: Im cool with putting up a fence, sure. However the cost in puttig up a fence, vs. ethically hunting a few animals and giving them the fear of humans is too great to ignore. The people that protested and put a halt in this highly manged hunt are only perpetuating the danger of having these animals in such close proximity. If you really like the elk, and I do.. I dont want to see them be erradicated, they must be manged much better. And to do that, the elk must start associating leathality with being close to humans. Its the only way we can both co exist. So yes, put up a fence by all means, but when putting up a fence could take months and further the time frame in which another person will plow into another 900lb animal, hunting, ethically and quickly should be used. ESPECIALLY durring these winter months where animals are comming down from elevation to feed. After all, the elk live in MY home range too and the onus is me the more evolved species to manage.

To shoot or not? WHOA BOYS. Before any lethal activity is taken, let make sure that the owners of the golf course have followed the same preventative measures that orchardists and farmers have to follow. PUT UP A FENCE. Until then, consider yourselves lucky that you have the privilege of living in the animals home range.

thomasdh62: How about DESTROYING your car and possibly injuring you and your family that happens to be riding in the car with you??? ... THAT is what happened to the guy who hit the herd bull. These are NOT deer at 150 lbs. They are the size of a horse. Left to run wild. The city is growing, and people think they can have them in their yards like pets. That kind of thinking is not only dangerous to citizens (i.e. car accidents) but to the population of the animal as well.

I live on Snoqulamie Ridege AND.. I am an Avid Hunter. I would like to challange all the nay sayers and protesters to get some education on this matter. Hunting is ESSENTIAL to the management of the species. Period. It MUST be conducted in order for the animals that do inhabit an area to survive. Call WDFW and talk to a biologist for proof. Do not hate hunters because they are willing to do the ugly part of what many of you meat eater and anti hunters do. I mean, afterall, who is more of a coward, the guy who is anti hunter but still buys meat wrapped in celophane? OR the guy who actually respects the animal enough to look it in the eye and harvest it? Finally... Many of you here have NO IDEA that just a few weeks ago someone hit the herd bull with their car, totalling the car and endagering their lives. This was nearly a 900lb animal. Why did he get hit? Because he has NO fear of humans and wild animals MUST have a fear of humans in a populated city or this stuff occurs.

Yeah Elk! There are so many other solutions here: rather than shot them, they could relocate them, fence the place in, or put repellent on the areas they don't want them in or stuff to attract them to the areas that they do want them in. Golfers shouldn't be out in all this cold and rain anyway! That's what Sunday afternoon football is for. Carry on Elk!

I am a golfer and a hunter and I think it sucks that the course is getting torn up but at the same time they were there first what did they expect the Elk would just move out? And if your ball lands in a track just move your ball and smile its a free drop. I would rather the elk be there than not. They are a beautiful animal, 99.9% of the time they won't harm a person. Though they taste awesome, I don't think that is a worthy reason to give out extra tags. Go to Enumclaw golf course there is Bear, Elk, Dear, Cougar,Coyotes, and for a couple months dead fish all over the course and its been that way for at least 30 years and nobody is complaining.

Seriously, wildlife management is a necessary evil due to our elimination of natural (no, that does not include firearms) predators. Lets put the Human back in the word Humane and come up with a more civilized solution. Remember, we are the species that supposedly has evolved.

There are repellents that farmers in Idaho use that keep elk and deer away; they are very effective. I believe Idaho Fish and Game supply them to farmers in and around Coeur d'Alene. So, TPC Golf, work a little harder to come up with a solution. Elk herds were there first!

I wonder what the basis of the objection is? I wonder how many of those 60 eat beef, chicken or fish? Or for that matter any meat product typically found in a grocery store. Frankly as a hunter myself I think killing an animal that you eat gives you greater respect when you go to the store and buy meat... If the herd gets too large it will actually benefit the herd to be thinned out.
