SPANAWAY, Wash. - A woman in her 80s has been critically injured in a house fire in Spanaway.
Fire officials say that at about 3 a.m. they received a 911 call from the residence at 15624 7th Avenue East. They say it was a hang up call. The 911 operator dispatched deputies to the home to investigate.
"County deputies arrived and found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home, (They) called fire, " said Matt Holm, Assistant Fire Chief of Central Pierce Fire and Rescue. "We just happened to be returning from a medical aid call about four blocks away. The guys pulled some lines right away."
When crews entered the home they found the woman unresponsive inside. Medics were on the scene and began administering CPR. She has been taken to St. Clair Hospital in Lakewood. According to Holm, the woman's condition has improved but she is on a ventilator..
The woman lives alone in the house. The woman's dog died in the fire.
The fire was in a family room. Holm said there was a working alarm in the house and it may have alerted the woman. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
