SEATTLE -- Do you feel safe in downtown Seattle? A new poll indicates that, for a lot of people, the answer is no.
Incidents like the January 28th beating in the Seattle bus tunnel naturally make people express concern about crime. But even without such high profile occurences, the story in downtown Seattle has apparently been a sour one for some time.
"There's certain streets I avoid," said one downtown resident. "I live in South Lake Union."
A recent poll by the Downtown Seattle Association shows 25% of those surveyed avoid downtown because of crime concerns.
Panhandling is a concern among 66% of those polled; 75% are concerned about drugs being sold downtown and 38% say they don't feel safe in downtown Seattle at night.
"I won't walk down Pike at night because it's not safe," said another resident.
FBI statistics put Seattle at 183rd place in crime rankings among U.S. cities. It's not a bad showing, but when crime incidents happen in the city and it makes the news, it gives new meaning to the saying "sleepless in Seattle."
"I've been shocked at the number of police responses that I've personally noticed down here," said one resident.
Federal Way ranked 141st on the FBI's crime rankings list; Everett ranked 90th.
The Downtown Seattle Association will host a public forum focused on public safety downtown today, 2/25, at 8 a.m. at the Market Theatre (1428 Post Alley) in Pike Place Market. Doors open at 7:30 a.m.
