BURIEN, Wash - A 16-year-old boy is under police guard at Harborview Medical Center after authorities say he shot and killed his girlfriend and then shot himself.

The shooting took place at 9:30 p.m. New Year's Eve, inside an apartment at 12445 Ambaum Blvd SW in Burien.

Neighbors say the 16-year-old female victim was the girlfriend of the alleged shooter.

According to upstairs neighbor Carolyn Jimerson, the boy crawled up from his apartment with a bleeding chest wound. The injured teenager then knocked on her door.

"He started falling and said he was shot, and fell to the floor. I didn't think he was going to make it," said Jimerson.

Steinacker says the couple had a tumultuous relationship.

"They were always so loud and fighting so often," she said.

The boy is in serious condition with non life-threatening injuries, according to Sheriff spokesperson Jim Laing.

Neighbor Krista Steinacker said the there were several people at the apartment having a party when gunfire erupted.

"The gunshots. That is what woke me up," she said.

According to a press release from the King County Sheriff's Department, the detectives have not been able to speak to the boy and discover what led up to the shooting.

The Medical Examiner has not released the name of the female victim.

Just another reason Burien should be avoided... Not that the land and infrastructure is bad, just the people who inhabit it - a lot like Lakewood, Renton, most of Tacoma, Lacey, Everett, etc. On a serious note, this was clearly gang related violence from the usual suspects. If the bleeding heart liberal democrats will just temper their affinity for the criminal element we might be able to get these characters put in prison.

The only solution to REDUCE these killings is making the owning of guns more difficult. When is our society going to finally get it? Owning guns is too easy. The Constitutional Right to own or bear arms is a license to kill for criminals and mentally unstable people. It should never be a right to own guns of any type, instead it should be a REGULATED privilege. Every gun owner should go through background check, training, licensing and insurance requirements, NO DIFFERENT than having a drivers' license. In fact it is easier for criminal and mentally unstable people to buy guns used to kill than it is to have your car emissions inspected. GET IT PEOPLE, GUNS KILL!! Even those who are fully armed like our police force are killed by guns.

Juliav there were many crimes commited with guns in the 60s-70s-80s and the 90s, we just didn't have the publicity and instant news we have today thanks to the Internet. the RIGHT TO BEAR arms have provided guns to criminals for 300 years in our country, even presidents have been killed with legally obtained guns. The sad part is that most US citizens don't want to give up the right to own guns. When even our police force (fully armed) can't be protected from these monsters, isn't it time to REGULATE the owning of guns, instead of passing laws to punich those crazy people after they KILL someone. By that time, it is too late.

Saying we have to enforce the laws we already have, is like saying punish those who kill our police officer and their families AFTER THE KILLING. By then, the damage is done and innocent people have died. WE NEED TO STOP these monsters from getting their hands on guns to kill others. The only solution is 100% background check, training required, license required and insurance required. STOP the mentally unstable and the monsters before they get their guns. The rest of us law abiding citizens should be fine with those requirements and our families and even our police force will be A WHOLE LOT SAFER.

World_Citizen...you're clearly not a gun owner. To get a weapon takes an extensive background check, all your weapons are registered. To get a concealed weapons permit is also a very in-depth process. No law in the United States would allow a 16 year old to purchase a handgun or a long gun (rifle, shotgun...ect) Guns don't kill people, crazy ex-boyfriends in gangs do. I own lots of guns, next time you're in a bad situation world_citizen with no police around. You'll be thankful good citizens carry weapons to protect the life and liberty of others. The work of policing our community is a responsibility of all of us. We all own a piece of this land and have a responsibility to protect it.

Guns don't kill people. 16 year old gang members do. World_citizen your points are horribly invalid. A 16 year old would never be able to legally obtain a firearm. A war against illegal weapons? Yes. Ban weapons? No...gang members can obtain all types of illegal weapons, who is to say that the Government will be able to enforce these laws? So gang members will have guns and own the streets, and law-abiding citizens will be defenseless!

The guns were made by a company and sold to an adult. Agree, there are ilegal guns out there but the vast majority are purchased legally, in fact 70 percent of the killings in the homes are committed with legal guns used against family members. GET IT, we need to legislate these killing tools and you should fear more legislation. The laws on the books only punish after the killing is done.

When someone thinks that a gun ban will actually help our society, think of the following..... States that allow concealed carry have over 50% LESS violent crime than states that no not allow it. (J.R. Lott study with FBI and CDC stats) Over 2.5 million times a year LEGALLY armed citizens use guns to protect themselves with over 200k of those being women who protect themselves from sexual crimes. (Kleck and Gertz, "Armed Resistance to Crime") In Florida, over the 15 years following them allowing concealed carry, homicide rates DECREASED by 52%. (FBI statistics) Countries who have passed sweeping gun control legislation have had as much as a 300% increase in violent crime and homicides. In Australia, armed robberies went up 44% in the first 12 months after the ban. (Benedict D. LaRosa)

The Centers for Disease Control did an extensive review of various types of gun control: waiting periods, registration and licensing, and bans on certain firearms. It found that the idea that gun control laws have reduced violent crime is simply a myth. Talking to prisoners about guns emphasizes a few key lessons. First, criminals don't obey the law. (That's why we call them "criminals.") Second, no law can repeal the law of supply and demand. If there's money to be made selling something, someone will sell it. A study funded by the Department of Justice confirmed what the prisoners said. Criminals buy their guns illegally and easily. The study found that what felons fear most is not the police or the prison system, but their fellow citizens, who might be armed.

What's the special risk? As Alex Kozinski, a federal appeals judge and an immigrant from Eastern Europe, warned in 2003, "the simple truth -- born of experience -- is that tyranny thrives best where government need not fear the wrath of an armed people." "The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do," Judge Kozinski noted. "But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed -- where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once." (John Stossel 20/20 reporter)

Japan and many other countries show us how safer society is without excesive guns. But the reality is this, the wild west mentality in the US is so prevalent that no argument will change the minds of the pro-gun mayority regardless of how reasonable those arguments may be. Still, the minority anti-gun lobby like me will continue to express our views because that is all we can do. In the mean time, inocent people including police officers will continue to die in our gun happy country. I just pray for my family to be safe from crazy monsters who live normal lives until they start shooting people with legally obtained guns in this great USA or ours.

I say neighborhood with pride. Unlike Bellevue, Kirkland or anywhere on the east side I have genuine neighbors, not just plastic people that live in the house six feet away from mine. My neighborhood has character, but then it's old money people, not Mcmillionaire's who think they are better than everyone. This is a horrible tragedy in a downtrodden area, Bellevue has these areas too. We the citizens of Burien have tried to improve that area and if you ever drove through you would see an upward change. We are an old proud city that takes care of our own. I'm sick of people in Stepford communities ragging on the South Seattle area, most of them wouldn't be welcome nor be able to afford Normandy Park, Three Tree Point or Shorewood. We have this beautiful protected Puget Sound.

Wow, I can not believe people are actually still blaming this kind of stuff on a gun. its an object. Yes their are illegal guns out there which are owned by CRIMINALS! if we ban them they will still be illegal and the CRIMINALS will still have them. But then guess what, how is anybody going to protect themselves. I just want to ask, somebody with a gun breaks into your house, how do you defend yourself? Guns are not the problem, people can kill people with a kitchen knife..should we have to pass a background check to be able to own a butter knife too? or a shoe lace? or our hands? Criminals obviously dont care about the law so what makes you thinking changing the laws will help? No, its the way people are brought up and raised, they were not taught about guns probably ever and played video games were their character goes around shooting people. or watching movies like that. Bad influence right their if used at a young age.

Read the law that passed by Legislation 5288 I believe in a nut shell it says "early release" and "No probation" maybe we should give them a gun when they are released to. We don't have to do that because they are going to go out and steel one, or obtain one illegal...

See if everyone might be carrying a gun, the bad guys think twice before pulling out there gun, if guns are outlawed or banned, the bad guys that still get their own guns will continue to get them anyway and will have no reason to think anyone else might carry one, therefore will be much more likely to use a gun against someone else without hesitation. A ban on firearms will only make these violent crimes more common place. The reason you never hear of someone's neighbor protecting someone else with their gun is because the media and the police HIDE that fact whenever someone does. I know from personal experience, had someone break in to a house who was armed, a neighbor came out to defend against the person breaking into the house and the police told him to stop and go back inside. The person who broke into the house ended up doing an 8 hour stand off with police and the house was heavily damaged in the process. Media never mentioned the neighbor that attempted to stop the crime.

I for one would love to see more gun control. However there is a right way and a wrong way to doing it. Since it is a Constitutional right to own a gun an amendment should be made and voted on by the states to further regulate guns. Skirting the Constitution is one thing that makes people distrust the government. With that said there is no way 2/3 of the states would vote for a constitutional amendment to further regulate guns and I'm ok with that because a law made the wrong way no matter how good the intentions is still a bad law.

Gun control is not the problem. Have you people not seen what has happened to Australia when they outlawed gun ownership. Crime rate across their country went up 400%. Criminals will do whatever it takes to commit a crime, and having an illegal gun in their possession will not stop them. As for WORLD_CITIZEN, all of the ideas you think should be exercised in order to purchase and own a gun already exist. For a law abiding citizen it is not easy to get a gun. We need stiffer penalties for all crimes from speeding, smoking in non-smoking areas to murder. If you kill someone in a crime you should die. If you steal you lose your hand. If you think I am wrong than what is right.

'noskills' Japan culture contributes more to low crime than anything. Most believe in being honorable and honest and it is very disgraceful to commit a crime. They still commit suicide when they feel they have dishonored themselves or their family. I would suspect in the next few generations this will change as is evidenced by the increasingly violent Japanese Mafia. Most Japanese will submit to them rather than disgrace themselves with committing violence.

If you can legally shoot anyone entering your property, then, maybe it's worth it. If people enter other people's property with dangerous reasons all the time. But that isn't so. Legally, you can't shoot anyone, even if it's your property, unless you're being victimized in felony level of crime. That's the law. So, if a criminal wants to shoot you, he will succeed all the time because he will pull out his gun before you do. And multiple gun men usually commit home-invasion robbery, so you lose again. Do you get it? Guns do more harm than good! That's the statistic!

I have the right to use deadly force if I feel my life is threatened, I am well aware of my rights. Some of your comments are contradictory and make no sense in real world instances. "Guns do more harm than good! That's a statistic!" Could you elaborate on this bizarre statement please. Just because there are certain things you believe, does not make them fact. The fact is, most responsible law abiding citizen's who own guns, do so for sport, hobby or protection. The criminal uses his illegal weapons to intimidate and harm other people. By taking away the law abiding citizen's weapon what is to deter the criminal, now that I am unarmed.

Neo, if you have so much disdain for Americans, why don't you pack up and settle in one of your gun-free Utopias?

I said I'm not arguing with gun advocates because I know they'll always win no matter what. Well, good luck. When I read about your success in using you gun to protect yourself and your family, I'll say, "Congratulation."

Mr. Anderson. I know you're a gun advocate, and you're using a reverse psychology to promote gun ownership. A nice move.

"Guns Kill" No sorry Stupidity kills. Just keep building your little victim zones and when they have collected most of guns they be at your front door kicking it down because they'll know you're unarmed.

Things that make u go hhhmmmm?! 1. Does anyone else think that it is weird that someone whom supposedly tried to commit suicide went and asked for help? HHHmmmmm?! 2. Does anyone else think that its weird that after the Jimmersons gave the police the story they stoped looking for a shooter and one of them has not been seen since(the 16 year old Jimmerson)? Hhhmmm?! Just a couple of things to think about. Just know that this wasn't a murder suicide!

For the pro-gun group (yes, I know you are the majority but that doesn't make you right) here is what I say “punishing the criminals after their killing is done is like closing the barn doors once the horses are out”. The only solution to REDUCE killings from guns is to reduce the number of people owning guns. I know many killings are committed by criminals who obtained the guns illegally but also many are committed by legal owners. Having a legally obtained firearm doesn't prevent unstable people from killing innocent people. Even police officers are killed by legal owners of firearms. Don’t you get it? Firearms are killing tools!!

world_citizen, I agree that gun owners kill, but if they don't have access to guns, there will alway be other "killing tools" available. Stricter gun laws won't solve the problem.

first off i live 3 complexes, it's really sad that this had to happen to such a young girl. As for the boy i really don't have any sympathy for this young boy cause he knew what he was doing when he did it. And as of those saying burien is a place to avoid is wrong because there are plenty of other citys, that is ALOT worse then burien and overall burien is a nice are area and yes i live in burien and was born and raied here. I believe this shooting was not gang related i think it was another deomestic violoence case sad to see it all starts as young as 16.
