Poll:
Should Seattle buy more snow plows?

SEATTLE – You hear someone say it every time the snow falls in the Seattle area.

“Why won’t they plow my street?”

“Why doesn’t the city have more plows?”

Following the 2008 debacle that some argue ultimately cost Mayor Greg Nickels his job, the city did a major revamp of its system and started using salt in addition to the plows to melt the ice. That new system got its first major test a couple weeks ago with back-to-back snow and ice storms. For the most part, the city fared better than four years go.

A new nationwide study by The Atlantic looked at cities across the nation, comparing the size of their snow plow fleets. The Atlantic found Seattle gets an average of 7.3 inches of snowfall per year and has 0.36 snow plows per square mile. Compare that to Chicago which gets more than 5-times as much snow and has more than six-times as many snow plows.

“The city (Seattle) is better prepared for another long-shot storm, but it’s not prepared like Chicago is. That just wouldn’t make sense,” writes the article’s author, Emily Badger.

Spokane has about four-times as many plows per square mile as Seattle, but it also gets nearly 7-times as much snow. New York City, which averages about four-times as much snow as Seattle, has more than 7 plows per square mile. That’s by far the largest fleet in the country.

Badger writes Seattle only has about 30 plows and the budget for those is usually decided on in the summer. The plows are strategically used to clear main arterials and bus routes. The plan does not include hitting residential streets.

No we dont need more snow plows,,, who came up with this dumb question? It will be far cheaper to let the city slow down for the few days it snows. Good grief,,

If you want an improvement in plowing, harness up a 20 bicycle team with cruiser tires, plow & chains. Then Mayor McSchwinn can lead them on plowing expeditions throughout residential neighborhoods to improve snow removal. That or use fossil fuel plows & salt to get to work!

I commute from Kent Easthill to 4th ave Seattle everyday during snow . I drive a Dodge Ram truck. I have no problem what so ever. All you cry babies need to get over yourself. The city doesn't need to plow

This article is a faulty comparison. You do not prepare a city for snow by having some amount of snow plows in proportion to their annual snowfall. Cities need to have a number of plows appropriate to the work that needs to be done on an average day of snowfall. Having more days of snow throughout a season does not require additional plows, it only requires enough plows to deal with a typical day of snow. Example: Small town x only needs one plow to adequate clear the roads on one day of snowfall. Small town receives snow on 30 days out of the season, 4=3x more than big city Y. Big city Y requires 10 plows to clear their roads after a day of snowfall, but receives snow on only 10 days out of the season. Does this mean Y should have less plows?

Yes, Seattle has enough snow plows, if it doesn't snow.

Even in the midwest, people either waited days for a plow to come by, or they had their own way to clear the roads. If you can't live with a couple days a year without getting out of the yard, buy a 4x4.

if they didnt waste 175 million on mercer , the city could have over 1000 snow plow trucks and shelter for the homeless

Even though Chicago, New York and Spokane have far more snowplows than Seattle, those cities still don't use them to plow residential streets.

In places like Chicago, or Minneapolis where snow is expected for most of the winter, citizens plan ahead and work together to clear their own streets. They'll be ready with their snow blowers and ATV's with snowplows. That goes a long way to help the city and people who live there. That's something that doesn't happen in Seattle. Instead we just stay inside and wait for a couple days for everything to melt. Which is fine, for where we live.

If people don't think we have enough plows, they complain. If we spend more money on plows, they complain. If people don't like the situation here in Seattle, move to Chicago or New York. You won't be able to drive anywhere because of the traffic congestion, but at least your street will be plowed. Have an adventurous spirit. Embrace the snow. Suck it up, put your chains on, and drive on!

Yup, get plow blades for the F250 and larger truck fleet.

Seattle has plenty of trucks; they just need to outfit them with plows and sanders! Something they finally started doing. Now they just need to learn how to use them.

This is a double edged question for the city. Because big dumps do not happen often, no additonal plows are needed, but when the dump comes, more are needed. They probably should look into more liquid de-icer and/or salt solutions before purchasing additional plows. I know people get upset with the lack of plowing, but you cannot have it both ways.
