Despite being a destination during Seattle’s summers, the city of Mercer Island has not had a hotel on it for five years. However, recently published plans may change that.
James Cassan, who is responsible for developing much of the Mercer Island Town Center, announced in the Mercer Island Reporter his intention to build a five-story, 100-room “boutique” hotel. He did not return a call from KING 5 Saturday.
The hotel would be on property he already owns. It was the site of the city’s previous hotel, which was torn down.
Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Terry Moreman said the city needs a hotel badly, particularly during the busy summer season.
“We’ve missed it,” she said. “Seattle and Bellevue run out of space. People come over here and they would like to stay here, and we have nowhere for them to stay.”
Specifics on the project were unclear Saturday. Mayor Bruce Bassett said he had not seen specifics of the proposal and could not elaborate.
