A Lewis County Sheriff's deputy was forced to shoot and kill a bleeding man who lunged at him with a knife Thursday, officials said.

The deputy said the man was bleeding heavily from self-inflicted cuts on his body and charged him when he asked if he needed help.

The deputy shot him to avoid being attacked, according to Deputy Stacy Brown with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was identified as a 64-year-old man from Napavine. Brown said the Sheriff's Office has had contact with him in the past.

The incident began around midnight as the deputy was patrolling SR 6 in Boistfort, outside Chelahis. While on the 2300 block of SR 6, he said he noticed the victim's car parked in a turnout.

Approaching the vehicle, the deputy said he saw the man with blood and lacerations on his body.

The deputy claimed the man got out of his car and charged him while holding a large knife.

Aid was called after the man was shot, but he died at the scene.

The deputy is a 9-year veterans of the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
