ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Phil Harris, the fishing boat captain whose adventures off the Alaska coast were captured on the television show "Deadliest Catch," died Tuesday night. He was 53.

Harris suffered what his family described as a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the fishing vessel he captained, Cornelia Marie, was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The fisherman was flown to Anchorage for surgery.

The reality show, which has filmed five seasons, has been one of the Discovery Channel's most popular and depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end," sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement released by the network. "For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."

In a statement, Discovery Channel senior vice president Elizabeth Hillman says, "Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him."

"We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart," she said.

The Discovery Channel has posted a video of Captain Phil moments.

In an e-mail to The Associated Press, she said no additional information was immediately available Tuesday night.

Harris had seemed to be improving, and in a posting last Saturday on the ship's Web site, he was described as "talking to friends and family today; showing his greatest progress" since the stroke.

His sons wrote in a Feb. 3 posting that "No one ever said Captain Phil Harris wasn't tough. Today, dad showed some good signs of improvement, squeezing our hands and even summoning his trademark Captain's bluntness ... We are encouraged but still very cautious."

According to the ship's Web site, Harris started working on fishing boats at age 7 and started work 10 years later on a crab boat. When Harris turned 21, he ran a fishing vessel out of Seattle, making him one of the youngest to captain a vessel in the Bering Sea.

When Harris suffered the stroke, the family said a friend, Derek Ray, had flown to St. Paul to take over the role of relief skipper for the rest of the opilio crab season.

Harris' fishing vessel was based in Seattle.

Josh, Jake Harris and family, Your Dad was a tough rugged guy who also had a great heart for those who he worked with. You could just tell that by his way. He will be missed, when you watch the show like my wife and I do, you guys are like family. I was shocked to hear of his passing. I lost my own father 2 years ago this June 1st. Not something we want to face. Hes in a better place. Now he can rest in peace and watch his sons grow and succed at Dads business. God bless the family and friends who are hurting at this time. Thanks for the lessons at sea, Phil. We love you and miss you. RIP

A story he told at CatchCon last spring was when he was 17 years old, he was voted Least Likely to Succeed by his school counselor. He went out fishing that summer and made $117k over the summer. Her house was up for sale, so he went to the bank and got out the money ($44k, I think he said?), plus some, and put it in a paper bag. Knocked on the door and went to her kitchen, threw the money on the counter and said, "Now, get out!" She wouldn't sell him her house though.

Don’t be dismayed at good-byes. A farewell is necessary before we can meet again and meeting again, after moments or a lifetime, is certain for those who are friends. Wherever we want to go, we go. That’s what a ship is, you know. It’s not just a keel and a hull and sails; that’s what a ship needs. Not what a ship is. What the Cornelia Marie really is, is freedom.

Captain Phil, you will be missed. My son and I have you in our prayers. Josh and Jake, know your dad is in a better place and how much he loved you both. The show will not be the same without your father, and I'm sure your careers won't be the same without him, either. You're both young and strong, and good men. Do your dad proud out on those seas.

This news makes me so sad. I lost my father 17 years ago, at the age of 43, and the reason I watched Deadliest Catch was because Phil reminded me alot of my dad:( My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends............Keep the good memories of him close to your heart and he'll always be with you.

So sorry for the loss of the family an crew members. I enjoy watching Deadliest catch. It's not a career that many people are capable of handling. It takes real skill, dedication and expertise to do what he and his crew do.

Feels like we have lost a good friend. Deadliest Catch is my husband and my favorite show. What a hard life he led but I am sure it was a life he loved. How great it was he and his two sons could work together. I am anxious to see the show as it is filmed this year. It will never be the same. Phil rest in peace.

I saw Capt. Phil out on the logboom (in a patrol boat) at Seafair last year, and he looked like he was having a lot of fun. Very relaxed and calm, not like we see him on TV while he's at work. I never would have thought that he'd be gone 6 months later. RIP Capt, I hope you find stuffed pots and calm seas where you are now.

The word will be a colder less colorful place without Captain Phil Harris in it. - As I walked by the dockside one evening so rare To view the still waters and take the salt air I heard an old fisherman singing this song, Oh take me away boys, me time is not long (chorus): Lock me up in me oilskins and jumper No more on the docks I’ll be seen Just tell me old shipmates I’m takin a trip mates I’ll see you someday in Fiddler’s Green Oh in Fiddler’s Green is a place I’ve heard tell Where sailormen go if they don’t go to hell Where the weather is fair and the dolphins do play And the cold coast of Greenland is far far away (chorus) Where the skies are all clear and there’s never a gale And the fish jump on board with a swish of their tails Where you lie at your leisure – there’s no work to do And the skipper’s below making tea for the crew (chorus) Oh and when you are docked and the long trip is through There’s pubs and there’s clubs and there’s lassies there too Where the girls are all

Thanks Phil for all the exciting hours you gave us crabbing in the Alaskan seas. I lived in Alaska many years but didn't know much about crabbing until the Discovery Channel introduced such brave men as you and your crew to the public. You will be missed by everyone for a long time to come. My deepest sympathies to your family. I am sure your sons will carry on your legacy.

My Grandfather was a crabman and I know its a tough life but one that men are proud to do and happy to live it. Captain Harris was like a bloodhound on the sea who just knew where to drop the string and when to pull them. His sons were proud to fish along side him and he'll be a presence sorely missed on the sea and the shore.

Like losing a family member. He was not your typical television star. Off to the great crab boat in the sky. Sympathy to the family.
