SEATTLE - The coyote that has been living in Magnolia for the past two months apparently attacked a small dog Monday afternoon.

LaQuita Fenton and her dog Tina were out waiting for Fenton's children to get off the school bus in the 2600 block of 23rd Avenue West when the dog saw a coyote across the street.

"So she ran to greet him by sniffing him and he went at her, with grabbing at her neck and shaking her up, and dragging her into the woods right there." said Laquita Fenton.

Fentons said the children on the bus saw the attack.

"They were screaming," said Fenton. "It was really scary. It just happened so fast."

Several citizens intervened and were able to scare off the coyote by throwing rocks and sticks at it.

Tina was taken to a veterinary clinic with critical injuries. First it was thought that her injuries were so severe that she would have to be put down, but vets said she would survive.

Residents are urged to keep their pets indoors.

UPDATE:

Tina is back at home after some KING 5 viewers paid the $900 vet bill. She has neck injuries and may need more surgery, but for now she's doing fine.

Coyotes do pose a threat to small dogs, cats, and children. During this crisis do not leave food outside for domesticated pets and put weights atop garbage cans. If vigilantes want to take rifles in Discovery Park to seek out coyotes...be careful that you do not shoot a homeless camper hiding in the trees.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife does not classify coyotes as game animals, but a state license is required to hunt or trap them (RCW 77.32.010). The owner, the owner's immediate family, employee, or a tenant of real property may kill or trap a coyote on that property if it is damaging crops or domestic animals (RCW 77.36.030). A license is not required in such cases. Check with your county and/or local jurisdiction for local restrictions. Except for bona fide public or private zoological parks, persons and entities are prohibited from importing a coyote into Washington State without a permit from the Department of Agriculture and written permission from the Department of Health. Persons and entities are also prohibited from acquiring, selling, bartering, exchanging, giving, purchasing, or trapping a coyote for a pet or export (WAC 246-100-191).

I live on a acre, wooded property in Magnolia and have seen this coyote twice in a month. I also have some very large dogs. 160# and 135# malamutes, it really scares me to no end. If my dogs were to catch this animal, they would suffer some very serious injuries, as this is not a dog! this is a fierce preditory animal thats not too afraid of humans anymore. DO WHAT THE DEPT. OF WILDLIFE SAYS, 'DON'T GIVE THEM A FOOD SOURCE'. I.E.,GARBAGE, PET FOOD, BIRD-FOOD. KEEP YOUR PETS INSIDE, HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN FOR YOUR PETS. IF YOU SEE THIS COYOTE, YOU ARE URGED TO CALL 911 FOR IT'S SAFE REMOVAL.

I feel bad for the poor dog, I do not feel bad for the idiot of an owner! sewardparkres, Yes, by your logic lets just kill off all the coyotes because they are dangerous! Get real, unless they are extremely hungry or threatened, they will not attack a human other than small children. And If you have small children, you are stupid to leave the child unattended, especially if they are outside! Not to mention that the coyotes lived here before we did, so if you have a problem with the fact you moved into their territory and not them moving in on us, move somewhere else. I am tired of ignorant people saying something should be done about this but it is our own fault and we need to live with the wildlife that is left and be aware of our surroundings and take the proper precautions to prevent something from happening.

Yes, cats can be "trained" to stay indoors happily--it takes time and patience, just like training a dog, a child, or a politician. Most importantly, it takes a sense of responsibility toward the pet and toward the community. I've seen it done by true cat-lovers. Small dogs aren't my choice, but they are good pets for many people. I'm sure this little one is well-loved by many kids and adults. I just hope it receives a leash and training post-recovery and lives a long life. That is one incredibly good-looking coyote! Probably best to move the animal away from Magnolia, though. Can I offer my back yard and my neighbors' cats therein?

we have leash laws. Is the owner being ticketed for her dog not being on a leash? I feel bad for her dog, but this could have been avoided.

Um.. Excuse me, but "Saw a Coyote across the street..." "Ran over to greet it" Why was the dog waiting for a school bus (presumably at the side of a busy - or at least traveled - road) with out a leash??? There is no mention of a leash, so it may or may not have been involved, I hate to extrapolate, but I must say that if there was a leash being used the dog wouldn't have been able to "Run across the street" and subsequently directly in harm's way. I value my dogs enough to keep them protected - even from themselves. Dogs don't have the deductive reasoning skills to think they shouldn't A) run across the street and B) identify a predator. That's why we have leashes, to keep our best friends safe. All that being said, I am so sorry to the family of the dog, and especially the children. I know how much a dog means to a family, and as a small dog owner myself, I know that they are our babies for life. I am glad she will live, that is very good news indeed!

Last night's news report said to call 911 if someone sees a coyote. I did that a year and a half ago when I saw a coyote in my yard one afternoon and was told this was not an emergency and was transeferred to five other numbers before being told that coyotes are protected and nothing could be done- just shoot with a Super Soaker or make noise to scare him away. Meanwhile, coyotes have been spotted many times and apparently have a den in Seward Park. They have killed off much of our cat neighborhood's population (including one of mine!). They have sometimes been seen working in pairs. Kittens who are not trained to be kept indoors cannot be forced to stay indoors as cats. There must be something we can do. The coyotes in Seward Park have been seen day and night and do not seem to run from people. Are we waiting until a child gets hurt?

small dog is food...probably tastes like chicken. It's always amazing when people think they're removed from nature. Nothing wrong or unnatural happened in this situation.
