SNOHOMISH, Wash. -- The number of homeless people continues to rise in Western Washington and that includes more children.

In King County the homeless population has grown at least three percent. And the latest count in Snohomish County revealed 829 kids under the age of 18 are homeless.

Erin Gannon is a single mother of three. Their home is now a small room inside the women's shelter at the Everett Gospel Mission. Life wasn't always this hard.

"We're together, that's all that matters," said Gannon. "We had a nice house and we had all the Christmasses and all that. And now, it's this."

Split from her boyfriend and no job, she had no place to go. So for a time she and her kids had no choice but to live in the family van.

"I couldn’t pay my rent anymore so that was it," said Gannon. “I never thought in a million years it could happen, especially with my kids, that was the most.. I don’t know, I blamed myself a lot.”

Despite signs of improvement in the economy Snohomish County is seeing an uptick in the number of homeless, where roughly a third of them are children.

"Homelessness for kids is always trauma even though they might look very resilient," says Sylvia Anderson, Everett Gospel Mission's CEO. "I think when you're homeless you're always struggling, wanting things to be better. But what we're seeing is people thinking things can't get better."

Erin Gannon doesn’t know what’s next for her family. But what she does know is they’ll get through it together.

"My son told me when I asked him one night about our situation, he said, 'Mama, I really don't care, we're together.'"

Homelessness is not neglect of a child. However, if you had a place, as a single parent with a child or more than one child, you were in a program and being provided subsidized housing and you purposely blatantly get kicked out due to not obeying the rules or your neighbors complaining you party too much then maybe it could be neglect. You were provided shelter and resources with a program to get you on your feet and you blow it.. but most homeless now are not in that position. MOST are due to the economy.. and that is the problem right now. The wait lists for even low income apartments are just not available! Even if they are available, it's a 2 year wait to even get a place. Children ARE better with their own parents.. foster care is NOT the answer. It's not a guarantee that it's even safer! There has to be more answers to this problem.. for ONE county this is alot of homeless children!

The numbers are staggering. Nobody expects to become homeless nor desires to be. Everett Gospel Mission Women and Children's center is a blessing to Snohomish county. Sadly, there are few women and children's shelters in the area. Many of these families need a hand up not a hand out. Unless you have been in their situation you will never know what it is truly like. The shelters are always accepting donations. Food, clothing, cash donations, diapers, formula, wipes etc. It's hard for the non profit agencies to help the community without donations and with the numbers climbing, they need more help than ever. The blessings that come with this is the No child left behind act, unfortunately, the transportation in the schools don't get funding for this. They transport the children to and from school of origin to maintain stability. These people need compassion, not judgement for their circumstances.

I am not the least bit surprised by this sadly. Foster care would be a worse alternative than a shelter. Struggling isnt child abuse and as it is there arent enough foster homes for the children who are abused or neglected in our county or the country. Affordable housing is great except that there are always the few who abuse it. If we helped the ones trying and cut off the ones using and abusing the system we could free up the tax dollars to accomplish that. Drug testing for welfare, housing and food stamps.Surprise inspections on the housing we are paying for. If you are getting subsidised housing you dont get to live in a fancy home. Just the basic needs met. Yet the republicans in our state think cutting minimum wage is best.

This is child abuse/child neglect. Kids need to be put into foster homes until circumstances improve. Yes I will answer the questions idiots always ask me. "What if it were you? Would you want your kids put into foster care?". My answer would be, "Why would I as a good parent want them to be homeless?"

Well you know, state government is concerned with other, more pressing issues.

As a father My first question is where is her 3 kids father, There is no way if I had somewhere to live my children would not. I hope her situation heals, I kind of wonder where all her people are too? is she from out of state or has she burned bridges? She sounds humble and just like bad circumstances but I'm so quick to offor my home to someone in need that I feel everyone should have enough fam and friends they are close to that they can call on in emergency's.

Loss of jobs and high rents make for a bad situation for families. Makes me angry that our country has come to this. Makes me cry. All the greed, self-centeredness, MY RIGHTS, disregard for marriage and what not...the list goes on and on and on...and here are these precious children without a home. Without security and stabability in their young lives. Disruptions from their friends, school etc. It rips my heart out. Surely our gov't. can do better than this. People NEED JOBS. They NEED affordable housing. They need to have some sense of self worth and dignity. Just don't get me started on what our elected officials and militant judges have done to destroy this country and all it once stood for. All I can say is SHAME, SHAME on all who had some part in the downfall of this once great country. I just hope we can elect a President who will put people back to work and shrink our gov't. so people can once again have the dignity of being able to afford a home for their families.

Wow, 1 out of every 334 children are homeless in Snohomish county. Even at 829, that's twice the total people in the state killed by speed as the WSP likes to push. With MADD saying our highway safety is 43 in the nation, meaning what the WSP is doing with that money is not working, we should take that money and help these 829 kids and families instead.
