Drivers around Seattle will have their patience tested as several major roads will be shut down for construction this weekend. Adding to the congestion will be the Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon and the Fremont Fair.

Here’s when the Washington State Department of Transportation says you can expect the worst congestion:

Saturday

  • Northbound I-5 from Boeing Field to SR 520 will have the heaviest traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. I-5 express lanes will be southbound from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Southbound I-5 from Northgate to downtown Seattle will have the heaviest traffic from 2 to 6 p.m. The I-5 express lanes will be northbound from 1:45 to 11 p.m.

Sunday

  • Drivers can expect extra congestion on I-5 throughout the day, however, traffic will not be as severe as Saturday due to the marathon.

The State Route 520 floating bridge will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday as part of the bridge replacement project. The bridge will also be closed next weekend for scheduled maintenance.

The northbound lanes of State Route 99 through Seattle will close between South Spokane Street and Valley Street from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. This closure includes the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the Battery Street Tunnel and is part of the final re-route of a temporary roadway near the stadiums.

The Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon starts at 7 a.m. Saturday, but drivers in Seattle and across the Interstate 90 floating bridge will feel the effects for most of the day.  Many streets from Seattle Center, through downtown and across Lake Washington before ending back at Seattle Center.

The I-90 express lanes will be closed from 3 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The left lane of the I-5 express lanes and the ramp to Cherry/Columbia and 5th Avenue will close from 8 to 10 a.m.

I-5 mainline ramp closures:

  • Southbound off-ramp to Dearborn will close from 5 to 9:45 a.m.
  • Northbound off-ramp to Dearborn will close from 5 to 9:45 a.m.
  • Dearborn on-ramp to northbound I-5 will close from 5 to 9:45 a.m.

The Fremont Fair will be happening Friday 3 p.m. – 11 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 11 p.m. and; Sunday  11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday is expected to be the busiest day with some 25,000 people attending the fair and the Solstice Parade, which happens 2:30 – 6 p.m.
