SEATTLE – A sea lion found dead on the Nisqually Delta last weekend was shot twice in the head, making it the ninth Sea Lion found shot to death in Western Washington in the past couple of weeks.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said x-rays identified two bullets in the sea lion’s head. They have been recovered for evidence.

Last week, officers investigated the carcasses of seven sea lions found in the same area of the Nisqually and one found on a West Seattle beach. All of them had been shot.

One of the sea lions is a Stellar sea lion, which is on the Endangered Species List. All sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Killing a sea lion can result in thousands of dollars in fines and up to one year in jail.

Reward offered

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is offering a reward of $10,000 to any person who provides information to the authorities leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for shooting sea lions.

In you have information, all the NOAA Enforcement Hotline: (800) 853-1964

Sealions -9 and counting. Authorities and Sea Shepard Zero. Anyone who has spent much time on the Sound knows sealions are overpopulated. Whomever did this...nice shooting!

@ uwlvdawg comiccon2010 lsmith5870400119 - - The same insane reasoning the three of you use to classify a sea lion as worthless can be used to consider your worth in the scheme of things.

It hurts to know there are folks callous and flippant to the unnatural death of the sea lion. As one of many who donate a lot of volunteer time with the Seal Sitters (albeit protecting harbor seals more than sea lions), what a bummer that others want to work at cross purposes. It'd be interesting to know where that hatred came from - but I figure it is rooted in greed. Fishermen want money earned from death and sea lions get in the way of that greed.

Protecting a Sea Lion is like protecting a sewer rat...

So has anyone talked to the Tribe? Their treaty predates the NMFA. They can and do shoot them without issue. Much ado about nothing, as far as the law is concerned.
