SEATTLE - Renee Perrault of Renton says she'll never forget the day a friend called about the arrest of Amanda Knox in Italy.

“She said, ‘Have you heard about the Amanda Knox case?’ I said ‘Yeah I have. It’s horrible. And she said, ‘Think about it, Amanda Knox.’ I’ll never forget that moment of how stunned I was that it was Curt’s daughter,” Perrault said.

Perrault, a retired retail executive, worked with Curt Knox years ago at the Bon Marche and helped throw a baby shower when Curt and his wife were expecting Amanda.  Now, 22 later, Perrault’s organizing another event - this one at the Comedy Underground in Seattle - to help free Amanda from prison.

The family has reached the brink of financial ruin paying for Knox’s legal expenses and traveling to Italy to visit her since she was arrested in November 2007. Knox was convicted last month and sentenced to 26 years in prison.

After she retired, Perrault became an amateur comedienne who often performs at charity fundraisers. She believes that Amanda was wrongly convicted for the murder of her British housemate, Meredith Kercher, and says she wanted to use her talent and her friendship with other stand-up comics to help raise money for Knox’s upcoming appeal.

But her venue is drawing some criticism.

“People are saying, they’re writing it, those anonymous bloggers, they’re saying how horrible we are for laughing. And it's not laughing at that event. No one would ever laugh at that. It's a tragedy beyond measurement. But there's another tragedy going on, what's happening to Amanda,” Perrault said.

Perrault says there won't be any jokes about the Knox case or Italy at the fundraiser Wednesday night.

For the fundraiser Wednesday night, Perrault’s lined up some heavyweights on the Northwest comedy circuit.  She and other organizers are hoping for a line stretching around the block because if the show sells out, it could bring in close to $10,000 for the Amanda Knox appeal fund. Tickets are $50 each.

" Because it is easy to see how the investigation and trial was unfairly handled and how they misinterpreted totally normal behavior of a young, slightly naive girl from our culture." Sorry, but I can see no way that the trial was unfairly handled. Writing a confession that puts you at the scene, listening to the murder committed by an innocent man, is not normal behaviour. If her other stories are to believed, entering a flat, that had its door wide open, stepping over blood stains, that were not there the night before, having a shower and then going back to see her boyfriend, is hardly normal behaviour.

@icecrystal23 - If this was my daughter or sister, I'd stand back and look at the evidence while supporting my family. I'd also be challenging the lies told, regardless of circumstances and not accepting that the story told first time. I'd be questioning why Raffaele allowed his lawyer to tell the court he wasn't sure if Amanda was with him all night and why he would say that. If I was Amanda, I wouldn't let my family saddle themselves with $1m of debt, innocent or guilty! Amanda Knox's mother knew that Patrick Lumumba was innocent yet she told noone. Her reason? "I don't speak Italian". Edda's words, on camera. Yet, Amanda's lawyers speak English and the police have translators. All this seems to show is that Knox and her family were happy to let an innocent rot for two weeks. Why should anyone help Amanda, who btw, is probably not innocent at all? Unbelieveable.

As a Brit living and working in Seattle, I've seen both sides of this case presented in the media. Where I have the utmost sympathy with the Knox family and their perceptions of their daughter's situation; there are a million other ways to raise money without holding a comedy night. A comedy night?!!! All this event is is kick in the face for the victim's family and their feelings. Perhaps if the Kercher family had agreed in public that Amanda and Raffaele were innocent it would be OK. Unfortunately for the Knox family and their PR campaign, the Kercher's employe their own lawyers, read the evidence and concluded that the guilty verdict was correct. I would argue that the Kerchers are the only truly impartial parties as they had nothing to lose or gain by Amanda's involvement in the case. Nine professional judges, four laymen judges and the victim's family concluded that Amanda is guilty, when will the penny drop in Seattle?

*she is a wrongly convicted innocent person* Had she not been a good-looking modern minded woman, the media would not have been interested in the case and rip her to shreds and eat the leaks/lies from the Perugia police... and then maybe she would have gotten a fair trial from the non-sequestered local jury. They should have move it to another town and sequestered as the defense requested. This was an unusual case with intense media appeal that through the scale of fairness out of the favor of Amanda. A verdict in a court of law isn't necessarily indicative of whether she is truly guilty or not. *she is a wrongly convicted innocent person*

I can't pronounce on her guilt or innocence but the fact that the prosecutor has been convicted of misconduct puts the verdict and in fact the prosecution itself in doubt. (Compare that to a person that has already served a prison sentence being arrested, many of you would pronounce him guilty because he committed a previous crime.) No one should get away with a crime but no one deserves to be imprisoned without a fair trial. The attorneys won't be working for free so they need the money to pay the attorneys. If you don't think they deserve the money, don't contribute.

Everyone's liberty is at stake when you don't fight for fair trials-unless you want to go back to witch hunters and the inquisition. Doesn't matter what country it is; yes, we should always fight for fair trials at home too. And yes, we have notable exceptions, and many that go totally unnoticed. Doesn't make Amanda's verdict right. Why does Amanda matter so much to Seattleites? Because it is easy to see how the investigation and trial was unfairly handled and how they misinterpreted totally normal behavior of a young, slightly naive girl from our culture. Add to this nothing but scant (at best) forensic evidence linking them to a crime scene where she resided and frequented by her boyfriend. And yes, I read more than US media. I currently reside abroad and spent a good bit of time weighing the various perspectives of bloggers and the Italian, British, and American press. Conclusion:there are a lot of witch hunters out there looking for a come-back whose interest is not true justice.

No kidding. A fundraiser for our fallen police officers and victims of Haiti's earthquake is a hell of a lot more important than Amanda Knox. I lost all sympathy for her family when they and/or their supporters started taking shots at the Kercher family. They're the ones who, in the words of Meredith's mother, have been given a life sentence. To tell them that they need to get over their grief and support their daughter's killer is beyond scumbag.

Some dumb little rich girl from Seattle got caught killing someone. Why do you defend her? She did it. We should not have to pay 50 dollars for a comedy ticket to support this girl. If she was anybody else (lets say a black male) NO ONE would be defending her. they would say oh He was drugged out and drunk he deserves what he gets. But no, since its a stuck up little white rich Girl from Seattle you seem to think that she could never do anything wrong. well guess what ? SHE DID. Now shes gonna be in jail for 26 years. Good riddence I say.

People are so cruel these days, especially online. If this was your daughter or friend you would not think twice about trying to help her. I think it's great that a family friend is doing something to support the Knox family. Best of luck in the appeal.

There is nothing funny about convicted murderers, despite the attempts by family, friends and PR hacks along with their media sock puppets to make it a circus. Everyone can learn the evidence and extensive analysis at www.truejustice.org. Andrea Vogt at the Seattle PI has been the only local reporter to demonstrate any journalistic integrity and ethics in her coverage of this case. Just type in her name in the PI site search bar for all of her stories.

We have local families of fallen police officers who are far more deserving of benefiting from fundraisers. We have critically ill children in the community who are fighting to stay alive; they're far more deserving of of benefiting from fundraisers. We have an underprivileged country on this planet suffering from severe devasation due an earthquake; they too are more more deserving of benefiting from fundraisers. Why on earth would anyone see fit to give any hard-earned money to a convicted murderess is beyond me, heavy emphasis on the convicted.

There is a recording on several sites of Knox saying that Raffaele (her so-called alibi) is a liar and that he had blood on his hands the night of the murder. She also claims that she cannot remember all the events of that night because she smoked marijuana. She was involved in this crime and anyone raising funds for her is no better than that rapist/murderer.

SHAME on these people who are putting this on.. The girl was found GUILTY!! I find it so insulting that people dont think Italy can successfully try a d person for murder. The Girl got off easy. I think if you kill someone then you should be killed. If you want to waste your money then go for it. I certainly wouldnt give a penny to her case. I say let her rot in Jail.

This fundraiser is for Amanda's family who are convinced she was wrongfully convicted. It will be attended by those of us who adamently agree that Amanda had nothing to do with the crime. I believe that the real criminal in this case is Mignini, the corrupt prosecutor who successfully railroaded her. We who contribute to Amanda's defense fund do so because we believe in her and are stunned by this egregious miscarriage of justice. As we care not just about ourselves or just for Amanda we regularly donate to charity. For extraordinary events like this one or an earthquake we force out more bucksin order to help out. Lately my concern for the events in Perugia has diverted my attention and funds, but my time and energies are still being used for other causes I believe in - the environment, health care, homlessness... As for Meredith, the best thing we can do for her memory is to seek the truth. The persecution of two innocents is not what she'd like to leave as her legacy.

Amanda is linked to this crime by her LIES and by her DNA - A "comedy night" in aid of her efforts to escape justice could not be more inappropriate.

I think this is Great! I feel empathy for the family. We all want to protect our young. The pain and agony that goes with it is extremely difficult. What is the name of the comedy? Perhaps............Shakespeares Ceasar? Etu Brute!
