MIDLAND, Wash.- A man is accused of intentionally starting a fire that destroyed the Golgotha Baptist Church early Thursday morning, according to Central Pierce Fire and Rescue.
When firefighters arrived at the church located on 85th and Portland, flames had destroyed a portion of the roof and the inside of the building. Fire officials estimate the church sustained $1 million in damage.
"They burned the building not the church," church member Ivan Olar said.
Church leaders and members arrived at the church Thursday afternoon. Many of them were very emotional and visibly upset.
"That would be my dream to rebuild this building, but it is just a complete loss," Pastor Paval Sandu said.
There were also fires at a vacant home and a car nearby, both of which were put out quickly.
A man was seen walking away from the church, according to investigators. He was later found at a home that authorities believe he broke into in order to hide.
Investigators said the 30-year-old suspect admitted to setting the fires. He has been booked on three counts of arson and two counts of burglary.
