BOTHELL, Wash. -- 9-year-old Rachel Beckwith was critically injured in the pileup accident on I-90 two days ago. The pastor at her church says Harborview doctors have given her family heartbreaking news.

"They realized the spinal chord was severed so there was nothing that doctors could do," says Jeremy Johnson, the teaching pastor at Eastlake Church in Bothell.

Her family and her church are determined that her energy lives on.

"She just throws everything she has into what she believes in," Johnson says.

Johnson says for her last birthday, Rachel gave everything she could to a charity that provides clean water to developing countries.

"She didn't want any presents. She didn't want a celebration," says Johnson. "She wanted to donate all of that to Charity Water. Her goal, her big crazy goal, was to raise three hundred dollars so that 15 kids in Africa would have safe clean water."

She fell short 80 dollars. So tonight, through their website and Twitter, Eastlake Church decided to publicize her fund raising mission. And the donations started flowing in, raising about a thousand dollars an hour at last check for Charity Water.

Even in her last hours, this young girl is teaching others to give.

"I've learned that I need to act now, that I need to be selfless, and out of my selflessness I can make a difference," says Johnson.

If you're interested in helping Rachel's cause, visit her website here: www.mycharitywater.org/p/campaign.

Her church is also trying to raise money for her medical bills. To visit their website, click here

Rachel's donation page is up to $861,300! $861,000 over her original goal. That is spectacular; it really helps regain the faith in humanity that can be lost in the daily grind. Thank you all.

Rachel was a kind, gentle, helpful, little girl that always put others first. Thank you all for making sure her legacy will honor her life. Thank you for showing your love and support to this family in their time of tremendous sorrow. Knowing people are praying for them and caring about Rachel's cause is a balm for the aching space that use to be their hearts. Having to explain to her four year old, two 3 year old (twins), and two year old siblings that the light of their life is never coming back to love on them, is enough to make a sane person crazy. With time, love, tenderness, and prayer everyone will be okay. However, a few weeks ago Rachel's dad found out that her four year old brother (her best buddy!) may have a serious health issue. He was to be tested the afternoon of the accident. These are amazing people who respect and love children. Please pray for their current and future mental and physical health. Thanks again.

Why is her church trying to raise money for her medical bills? KOMO reports that the company that owned the truck has a history of violations... perhaps the investigation would find them at fault? Presumably that company (AP Transport in Blaine) had some sort of insurance for their fleet? Please follow up. Monies raised by her church should, IMO be going towards the charity, not medical bills.

With respect to this girl and her family - the saddest part is that when aid groups help the starveling and miserable of the Third world - it's NEVER the nation, the person or the NGO getting the thanks. It's =ALWAYS= starts out "Thank God" or "Thank Allah" etc. The superstitions never get the BLAME for the misery of the world, but always get the GRATITUDE...

charleylechein: I get what you are trying to relay. However, its a big ole world out there with alot of need and charity water provides for many people something we waste so profusely. In America we get to pursue freedom, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. For some, maybe that pursuit of happiness has to do with helping others outside of America with problems we don't really have and if we really tried could erradicate entirely! Be the answer. To the family of this awesome little girl, my heart is extended to yours. I pray when peace cannot be found , that the God of all peace would surround you. Amazing little girl indeed.

Sherry_Reyno6e4: Wow...seriously? Ok, number one...so you should probably educate yourself on the varying degrees to spinal injuries and the degree of damage they can cause. Comparing a broken neck to a SEVERED SPINAL CORD...two different situations. Number two: again check your presupositions at the proverbial "I know what I am talking about" station, because you clearly do not know what you are talking about as you lecture a grieving family on insurance issues. Third, please read. For the sake of knowledge and a educated comment read! It is the church that will be doing what churches do for one of their own: assist with tragic situations to help take the burden off of the family. Fourth, you mentioned having a pastor. Good. You go to church. Great. Then please stop the armchair quarterbacking and pray for this family who are devastated by this horrible inncident and thank God for your own family and love on them!

Ive been sitting here looking at my monitor for about 15 minutes, not sure what to type. Or to even think about this story. I do know that we need more people to care about more people in this world. Maybe people will donate a lot of money for the water project, which is a good thing and its positive. It also helps other people seeing the people from America as caring, to help others getting what we may take for granted. Maybe her death will get more people involved in helping, and maybe helping our citizens that need help as well. Why not set a higher goal, raise as much money to meet that goal and then work on problems affecting people living in the USA.

Just for the record, its more that just the spinal injury that is the cause of what will be her death. So please don't judge everything based on what you read in articles. She was an amazing little girl. I am so sorry this had to happen. From the moment I found out things were not going to be okay I have been searching for answers. Let's honor rachel. Rest in paradise lil angel.

I feel that one of the comments is incerdibly insensitive. Not all neck injuries are created equal for one. It was quoted in the article by the Pastor that the young girl had a "severed spinal cord" which is different from a broken neck (and I know that not all broken necks are created equally. Some make full recoveries, while others are disabled for life, or even die from complications). And the financial burden of having a loved one on life support is tremendous. The family isn't asking for money, it is the church who is preparing for the future so that the parents don't have to worry about the finances and can deal with their emmotional grief. Groups do this all of the time to help people in their community that they care about, I don't know why you have to criticize them for trying to help.

How sad but I don't understand how a broke neck means that you are going to die? Clearly she is still alive just on a respirator and it would be a difficult life to live but, Our pastor broke his neck last year in a motorcycle accident at c-5 and he was told he would never have feeling below the neck and if his wife had taken him off life support he wouldn't have been able to WALK into church this spring and give the Easter Service. I don't want to sound insensitive and I know her family is in pain but for other families to avoid the added burden of having to worry about $ at a time like this no-one should ever have to ask for money for a child's healthcare costs. If they are low income their are children insurance programs that are very low cost and Haborview has charity care as well. You also can add a child to your policy for very little money. It is part of being a responsible parent to provide health care insurance for your kids so that situation like this don't happen.

Life seems so unfair at times. To take the most innocent among us. Rest in Peace Rachel.

I was really hoping that there would be good news about this little girl. This makes me want to cry. What a lovely young lady, and what a wonderful family to think of the good that can be done in their daughter's name at a time of such unbelievable heartbreak. Bless them all.

What an amazing little girl. I got stuck in the traffic after dropping my child off at BCC for a summer running start class. On my way back to the island it was obvious there had been a bad accident but I didn't realize how bad until later. She's a beautiful beacon of light that has her angel wings and I feel so sorry for her family and friends that knew her and have to live with trying to let her go. I do not think I'd have that kind of strength if one of children passed before me I plan to make a donation this morning in her honor. RIP Rachel!!!!

That dear child...it's heartbreaking to watch her go at such a young age, and even then to teach adults to be self-less in her last dying hours...Such a beautiful young girl. It's devastating.
