SEATTLE -- Beginning this Thursday June 10th, it becomes a primary offense for Washington state drivers to talk with a cell phone pressed to their ear.

For adults, that means paying a fine of $124; however, for teenagers, there is more than just money involved. Teens caught in the act will not be allowed to graduate past their intermediate driver's license until they turn 18.

Right now, teenagers must have an intermediate license for their first six months behind the wheel, or until they turn 18, whichever comes first. During that time, they can not drive between 1 and 5 a.m., and they are not allowed to have any passengers in their vehicles other than immediate family members.

"Yes. I think we'll be very busy," said Trooper Christina Martin, Washington State Patrol. She and her colleagues are gearing up for some long days ahead. While adults may be unhappy to be ticketed, she knows teens will be even more upset up they are caught violating this primary offense.

"It's there for a reason," she said. "Statistically new drivers, teenaged drivers, have a very high collision rate, injury collision rate. And the purpose of that law is to allow them to get their driver's license, get out there, and concentrate on their driving. And learn about being safe on the road."

On the highway, a driver distracted for even a few seconds can travel close to the length of a football field which can have deadly consequences. Most teens we talked with say they did not realize they could be stuck with an intermediate license for an extra year or longer if they're caught on the cell phone while driving, but most agree it's a good idea.

"I agree with them," said 17-year-old Asupa Hefa."It's like, reasonable. But other than that, it is kind of, like, strict."

"I think it'll be a little helpful. Less car accidents and stuff out there, you know," said Federal Way senior Cody Maxwell.

"The public has been warned for two years, a grace period of two years. We're saying the free call is over with respect to getting a citation. They will be stopped and for the most part will be cited," said Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick.

The Washington State Patrol warns there will be no grace period for this law.

Along with each city's red light cameras and speed cameras, this new law will bring a lot of revenues for city, county, and the State.

kids should not be allowed to text as much as they do. It's anti-social and prevents them from having real interactions. cell phones and ipods are the two worst inventions.

I for one, am glad that the state finally made it a primary offence, I think that some of the people talking & texting need to be made aware of the dangers of their behavior, and the penalties involved when they ignore the law! I speak from experiance, because I was involved in a hit and run because a person was too busy talking on their cell phone, and pulled out infront of me, from a side street without looking, and I hit him while I was riding my motorcycle! I was left in the middle of the road broken and bleeding, while the person didn't even stop to see if I alive. I was very lucky in the fact that there was an off duty EMS driver two cars back who was able to administer first-aid to me until the Aide Car arrived! I hope that the people who think that it is their God given right to talk & text on their cells will learn to either go without the distaction or learn to use the proper "hands-free" devices so that they NEVER have to experiance what happened to me!

Not just teenagers, I still see a lot of moms talking on their cell or texting while driving their SUV and minivans.

The ban is good yes.. or the ticket is.. But, Why not attack the drivers who have their radios going so loud.. all you hear ten cars away is BOOM BOOM BOOM!!! That drives me crazy. Those people should be ticketed for public nusance-, noise.. Even jet airliners have to comply with noise abaitments... why not cars?

@blankingout : Common sense FAIL! The simplest solution is to not even TOUCH your cell phone while you are driving.

ROLFLMAO @ You idiots thinking this law will help. The only solution to this mess is the mom with the device installed in cars cancelling any ability to use a cell while in the drivers seat.Wise up people.

Nice! I guess the state will make up it's short fall through another "behavioral modification law". You people who drive while talking on the cell phone are going to pay the way for the rest of us. BTW THX!!

Two worst inventions: cell phones and ipods. Withoutn them, there would be more of a community instead of people being off in their own little narcissistic worlds.

Well bluetooth isn't going to change the rate or number of accidents, when your talking on the phone with someone you are not paying attention to driving, so not sure hands free will make that much difference.

I wish natural selection would work swiftly to take people like blankingout (who feel they have the right to endanger everyone else) OUTof the society without taking innocent people with him/her.

Good grief. If you cannot live without texting while driving you have far more problems than just being a bad driver. Seriously, get a life. Meet real people. Farm Story can wait.

Yes i cannot wait either. I cannot wait to see how much the state will make off this new law, and teach most who break it. Maybe the state will repeal some of the new tax laws! Yeah Right, huh?

BTW, these people "writing" down there, your scripts are cute but I can read between the subtle differences.. YOU guys just made my commute more dangerous. Texting and cellphone driving used to be something as simple as tuning the radio... Now, people are thinking about driving for 1 sec... then it's quickly look away from the road and down where I have my phone hidden, type a word, look for a cop, look at speed, finally look up at the road, then repeat. SOO much more DANGEROUS than before! Thanks guys...

I am SO ready for this law to go into effect. I've been rear-ended twice by drivers who were on their cell phones, and have had too many other scary experiences with inattentive drivers who "think" they are able to drive just fine while carrying on an unneccessary phone conversation.
