SEATTLE -- In a fenced in, meet-and-greet area, Dean Suddath introduces herself to a black and brown chihuahua who caught her eye.
"I wanted an alert dog," says Suddath. As if on cue, the pint-size dog starts barking.
Suddath is at the Seattle Humane Society and she's toying with taking the dog home.
"It's not like going out and buying a purse or just something that you want to carry with you temporarily," says spokesperson Amanda Walde. "These animals you need to make a commitment for their entire lives."
Many of these chihuahuas are here because their previous owners in California didn't make the right decision. The over bred dogs Hollywood made so popular, seem to be falling out of vogue. 42 of them were flown to Washington state last week with the hopes of finding them new homes here.
14 year old Dylan Sherman of Kirkland adopted one with her family Sunday.
"I think it's really sad because I really like chihuahuas," she says. "I think they're cute and sweet."
After mulling it over, Suddath makes a decision.
"It's like adopting a kid, you know," Suddath says. "I've never adopted one from a shelter but I figured out this is the best way."
The Seattle Humane Society says its adoption fee for chihuahuas normally runs 275 dollars. But it's offering half off for Valentine's Day.
