SEATTLE -- The partner of late Washington state Senator Cal Anderson says he never thought he'd see gay marriage legalized in the state, but today he's filled with mixed emotions.

"I'm so excited," says Eric Ishino. "Cal is probably up there right now with a big smile on his face."

The state Senate voted 28-21 Wednesday to approve a bill allowing same-sex couples to legally obtain a marriage license. The bill is expected to pass the House next week and then be signed into law by Gov. Chris Gregoire. Opponents vow to put the measure before voters in November.

Sen. Anderson was Washington's first openly gay legislator who fought for marriage equality for 11 years before his death of AIDS-related cancer in 1995.

Anderson, who was also a decorated Vietnam veteran, overcame adversity in Olympia, but never lived to see his dream of gay marriage become a reality.

"Some legislators didn't even want to sit next to him," Ishino remembers. "He knew it was going to be a long struggle. But he was a great leader and at least started the discussion."

Anderson told KING 5 in 1995, "I've done a lot of great things to educate people about gay issues. Now I can educate people about AIDS and how it affects the community."

Ishino himself has been a strong supporter of Sen. Ed Murray, who is also openly gay, and his efforts to pass the same sex marriage bill.

Ishino wonders how his partner may have reacted to this day.

"I just never thought in my lifetime that I would see this," he says. "But it’s OK. We always knew in our heart that we were married."

Wow, judging from the (over)reaction of the right these last two days, we are in for 9 months of vitriolic crapola until the majority of voters get to decide the legal status of a minority. And Washington State is supposed to be one of the least religious states. I can't imagine the level of ignorance spread on pages like this in a Bible Belt state. I would hope we would be a little more open minded about anybody who simply doesn't believe "The Book" should rule their lives.

@goonie5000 - You need to read The Book and see what it really says about homosexuality. A study of history and the civilizations that have normalized the behavior might also be in order. Then, get a dictionary and look up the word "hate." It does not mean someone who disagrees with you.

I am truly disgusted by all the hate that this has brought out in so many people. If anybody should be ashamed it is the ones that speak so cruely of others and have so much hate in their hearts and minds. And to mr_conservative, you sir will be the one not going up. I thought god was about love and acceptance, I think you need to re-evaluate in what you believe in and think is right.

This is indeed great news. How much hatred do some legislators have to actually get up and sit somewhere else when Cal took his seat. It is just pitiful that people who openly express such contempt could even make it to the legislature. It is embarrassing to even read. I see by the comments that the usual suspects are having their childlike tantrum and lashing out. They are once again proven to be on the wrong side of history. That is just the cherry on top of this whole ordeal. : )

Sad day for Washington state, they can legalize all they want, but it will always be marriage is between man and woman, has been beginning of time. Government should be ashamed of theirself, Hope they dont attend church, if they do they need to ask for forgivness for what they voted for.. Well they can vote all they wanted but they will never enter Heaven, God destroyed them in the Bible, they can enjoy what they want to call marriage, but on earth is all they will be able to, Heaven there will be no place for them.
