SEATTLE -- Mondays leading up to Christmas are typically high-traffic days at post offices around the country, but not as high as they were a few years ago.

The U.S. Postal Service expects about 16 billion of parcels will be mailed nationwide between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, said Seattle-area spokesman Ernie Swanson. That's down from 20 billion two or three years ago -- a 20 percent decrease.

"Partly because of the economic recession, but also because people are migrating to electronic means of communication," Swanson said.

Thanks to the decrease, the Postal Service lost about $8.5 billion last year, forcing major cutbacks, including the elimination of about 100,000 jobs.

Lines were still long at the Queen Anne post office location on Monday because many people were mailing letters and packages that were finalized over the weekend.  This Monday and next Monday are usually considered the busiest days at the post office during the holiday season, even though volume is down over the past couple years.

"This is the longest I have seen it," customer Eivor Von Hagel said after getting in line. "It may take half an hour at the most," she said, adding that service at this location is typically fast.

Meg Van Deusen was stamping and mailing about 60 holiday cards that were all written on Sunday.

"We haven't sent them in a few years," she said. "We've got a lot of catching up to do."

Van Deusen attributed the hiatus to "time and money," but decided to send to traditional cards, instead of e-mail cards, this year.

The line was much shorter -- only a handful of people deep -- in front of the Automated Postal Center. Many customers are afraid to use the machine because they like to have an employee guide them through the process, but Patty Carr decided to brave it Monday. Within just a couple of minutes, she was applying a stamp and putting her package in the mailbox, saving about half an hour of time.

All I know is that they have six or seven windows but, usually, only have two open to help customers. It will be awesome when the postal, "service", is over.

Well of course it's not as busy. Have you ever been to the Post Office? I avoid it like the Plague. Come to think of it, I might deal with the Plague over standing in line at the Post Office every day.

and of course no one remembers that certain Priority Mail prices were recently DECREASED, Flate-rate envelopes were deecreased from $4.95 to $4.90, but no one noticed that.

Prices taken from USPS.com and UPS.com for parcels mailed/shipped from their locations. Zip 40336 going to zip 98320 {randomly chosen, but going across the country}, for a 2 pound parcel going to a residential address: USPS Parcel Post- $8.09 USPS priority mail- $9.55 UPS Ground- $15.53 UPS 3 Day Select- $25.41 You people claiming UPS is cheaper are talking through your hats! Go on the facts, not your perceptions! You just THINK the USPS is more expensive, because you want to believe it.

Postal rates have not increased in 2 YEARS! How much have UPS and Fedex rates increased? People keep saying that we are always increasing our rates, but don't realize it is YEARS between increases, and then it is a few CENTS. Gas goes up 15 centa a DAY around here, and people think a penny is the end of the world. Around here, you would have to drive 30 miles to the nearest UPS store or facility. Even if they were cheaper {which they aren't} you spend $8 in gas to get there and back.

i just want to buy some stamps. But every time i go to the PO, there is some slow lady at the automated teller who just cant figure it out. It was better when they had vending machines to buy stamps. When i go to grocery store,,, they either do not have them, can not access them, or do ot know how to transfer that transaction, from cash in my hand to a book of stamps in their drawer, it can't be done easily.

My business requires me to ship across the country. I found USPS to be the highest rates there are. Maybe that is why. Even a flat rate box isn't a deal compared to other shipping companies.

There are alternatives, I used an alternative to order something and have it shipped to me, a gift. The package was shipped, but they left it at outiide my door. I called the company i rdered it from wanting to know about it. I was told that XYZ company showed it was delivered. I called XYZ and they stated "I had not selected that the package had to be signed for". I called the company i orderd the gift from, and the CSR plaved me on hold than then dropped the call. I will always use the services for packages. The postal rates in the US are cheaper than overseas, like gaoline, but thats doesnt matter cause you are lucky to be living here. Hopefully the job losses went to people that came from other countries. At least 25 % of the postal workers in Everett are foreign nationals, Im a veteran, and disabled, I could answer the phones, but someone that you cant understand their English has that job. Go figure.

I think it also has a lot to do with Fedex and UPS. I'm sure the jobs lost in the post office were gained with private shippers. I can't stand going to the post office. I feel like I'm in a welfare line. It's all run down, the employees are sort of lethargic, and in the end UPS isn't much more. I also tried to do a bulk mailing as a small business this year, and couldn't believe how expensive it was. Google ads served me better and reached more people. The times are changing...

armageddonit-wow..where do i even start . first of all if the usps was privatized you would see a HUGE spike in postage and oh yeah...the usps is actually still cheaper to ship than fed ex or ups. the usps by law is not allowed to advertise that it is cheaper than fed ex. next time do some research before posting.

Well could that be because the postal service keeps raising their rates and we shippers find an alternative company's to ship with. The postal service complains they are losing money because people are not shipping as much, why because you keep raising your prices and there are better alternatives Government mentality, we just ain't making as much cash as we used to ok let's lower the service but raise the prices Time To privatize the postal service Oh and by the way the wonderful U.S. Government postal service has another increase coming in January
