OCEAN SHORES, Wash. -- Over the Fourth of July holiday, the Ocean Shores Fire Department hired extra firefighters and has a bull dozer standing by.

Both came in handy when fireworks started a brushfire in the sand dunes south of Ocean Shores.

“It was starting to get a little scary for the guys,” said Captain Brian Ritter, who credits preparedness and the dozer for containing the fire.

Seven homes were evacuated before firefighters gained control of the fire.

When Bob Harnagy saw it spreading towards his home he sent his four children across the street and grabbed his garden hose.

“When it hits home like this it’s really frightening,” said Harnagy.

Winds of 10 to 20 mph helped the fire grow to seven acres before it was put out.
