SEATTLE - "Bodies the Exhibition" has twice come to Seattle, and while the exhibit has drawn plenty of people to see bodies of mostly Chinese people embalmed in plastic, the exhibit has also drawn protest.

Charlette LeFevre has been saying for years it's time to ban the bodies.

"When you knowingly import in human remains from another country that's desecration, pure and simple," she said.

Now City Councilman Nick Licata has proposed legislation regulating exhibits featuring human remains.

"These exhibitors have to show that they received the permission of the pre-deceased or the next of kin," he said.

If Seattle passes the legislation it wouldn't be the first.  The state of New York and the city of San Francisco passed similar legislation, while that state of Hawaii has completely banned all exhibits of this kind.

"The New York State Attorney General found out there is an underground industry in China right now that is marketing dead bodies and my concern is are we pushing people into the dead body category before it's time for them to be in that category," said LeFevre.

Premier Exhibitions said in a statement on their website that "(the remains) were obtained from a plastination facility in China, which received them from medical universities in China. These medical universities received the remains from medical examiner authorities in the Chinese Bureau of Police. The specimens are unclaimed by next of kin and there is no available donor documentation."

LeFevre says regardless of documentation the people in the exhibit deserve better.

"We honor the dead and what they did in their lives, how can we stand by and see an exhibit literally desecrate the bodies of young Chinese men?" said LeFevre.

The Seattle City Council votes on the final legislation on Monday night.

I've seen the exhibit, I found it both fascinating and appalling at the same time. Bothered me a bit the whimsical way some of the bodies were positioned because it, in my opinion, was an unnecessary addition to the display. I get it, show people something that will get them thinking, I know I'll never forget it. But to do things that appear to have no other purpose than to do them, that's beyond the scope of reasonable. So do I think they are right on? Nope. Do I think they need to be stopped? Nope, it's no more dignified to die in an unmarked grave than this alternative.

"Why not ban those tin cups at starbucks?" I see someone has given life questions a lot of thought! Let's see....the Chinese are already supplementing human hair for protein in their processed food....Soy-lent Green anyone? What maroons! Whatever brings pleasure, amusement, satisfies curiosity - mindlessness. C'mon.....

Why don't they ban the bible? Incest, Murder, it's all there! Why not ban those tips cups at starbucks? That's take free income not being reported. why not ban all figures of Jesus on the cross? Exact same thing as the bodies exhibit. Why not ban the mariners for a couple of games, couldnt hurt. The exhibit is pretty cool. C'mon, the bodies are from china--they have like a bajillion people anyway. Use models? Then it would be called "Models". I propose legislation which prevents the city council from proposing this proposal, I've already formed a committee, have a focus group, and have empowered a number of people......

Then we should ban the mummies from Egypt, because we dont have consent from their familes either...c'mon people!! If you dont like to look at it... DONT GO SEE IT!!! I have NO interest in viewing human remains, so I havent gone to the exhibit, but what about a person who is interested...who might become a doctor or a forensic examiner, or somebody who just might make a difference in the future all because they were able to view these bodies. I say let the exhibit stay in Seattle!!

Wow, once more although I shouldn't be, I'm stunned by people. Seems many, in order to cover for their own dislike of the exhibit as a whole, will jump at the rumors about the bodies. It's not proven people. And like t.v., if you don't agree, don't watch. But for those of us who find the human body fascinating, both from a scientific standpoint and yes, even an artistic one, please don't try to force your own narrow outlook on us. My children would love to see this, and I would love to take them. But that's just MY belief, one I'd like to be able to exercise thank you.

I agree with the legislative proposal, especially with the concerns at hand. But, my question is...is it really necessary to use actual plastic-ized (yes, folks...I know it's not a REAL word...don't get all bent outta shape!) bodies? Why not just use life-like models?

The voluntary donation of a person's remains should only serve to the advancement of medical science; certainly not for art and entertainment purposes. Regardless of your viewpoint, it is despicable that a for-profit company can get away with using the human remains of those who did not give their explicit permission for their bodies to be use in this fashion. It's wrong on both levels.

See, and here is the thing. You have put these bodies on an exhibit, in a form that excites the human way of thinking, and in a way that doesn't frighten observers away. Would you rather that for someone to see the inside of a human body that they visit the morgue? This is just a way for curious individuals to see how the human body looks, and is made up, which I think is utterly fascinating. I only got to see books in anatomy and physiology classes, and I think to see the exhibit was great. Follow this simple rule: if you don't like it, avoid it. Don't try to ruin anyone elses good time.

senor... I work in a medical profession... and I appreciate the need to study anatomy and physiology, particularly in that setting. What we have here isn't a "study" for those who will actually learn (and in turn benefit others) via their medical education, but rather anatomy as a form of art. This from people who did not knowingly donate their bodies for this artistic purpose. I appreciate your right to have a diverging opinion from my own... but I think this application is just plain wrong.

I think it is a great learning experience to see these specimens in person. I have gone, and thought it was wonderful and thought provoking. People, you need to get over yourselves, it's just the human body. Next you'll starting asking for bans on bikinis at beaches because it's offensive to see skin in public.

I saw the exhibit the first time and found it eerily facinating and profound. If they're unclaimed bodies, why not use them for educational and enlightenment purposes? Plus, no one is forcing any given individual to pay to see the exhibit. If you feel the practice is wrong, then don't go - but don't force your beliefs on to others.

Did these individuals donate their bodies to science. If they did then I see no problem with puting them on display. This is a wonderful educational tool that can be seen outside the Medical profession.

Please someone explain the logic behind this? "When you knowingly import in human remains from another country that's desecration, pure and simple." Your particular religion may espouse this belief, but that is not a reason to ban this in and of itself. Is there EVIDENCE to support the allegation that this display constitutes trafficking in persons? If so, ban it. If not, go get your facts together, THEN discuss it in that light. This is a superb educational opportunity that millions have benefited from. Do not deny it to many more because of your perceptions. We are a country of logic and law, not emotion and hyperbole. Or so I thought....

At first I thought it was crazy and sick to have dead bodies shipped here, and studied from another country. And it seems like a low blow to the dead person's soul & his family. But the bodies are so nicely done, very proffesional, and looking ready to be studied! As long as they're not peeing off the deceased person's family, or using my body for dog food, and HECK, if no one claims me when I'm dead, I wouldn't mind colleges using my body to help further their education! As long as they don't throw me in the dumpster when I start stinking!

Doesn't surprise me that they're Made In China, everything else is. Also I don't trust the Chinese communists one little bit, their declaration carries absolutely no weight with me. I don't like banning anything in this country but rather let individuals decide their actions for themselves, but if the Chinese are stealing bodies to display for publicity and profit then that's a different matter.

I think the city council should vote to ban the deaths of Chinese people, then it will be a moot point. In seriousness, so long as we continue to believe in the myth of survival after death, exhibits like this will be viewed as loathsome and sacrilegious - not as a marvelous opportunity to learn the mysteries and wonder of the human body. Some folks are still in their infancy, intellectually. Hopefully, the Earth will survive them.

What?!? If you have a problem with what China does with their bodies, go talk to China. It's their bodies, their business. How they go about it may not be what you agree with, but you don't live in China. If you don't want to see it, don't go, if it's offensive to you. Personally, I would find it fascinating to see. If China had a problem with what they do with their dead bodies, they wouldn't do this, would they? If you want to honor the dead, fine. But, if China doesn't care, neither do I.

To be fair, summer_son, we know where the ancient bodies of kings and queens are coming from. The problem here is that we don't know where these Chinese dead are coming from - were they slaves? Were they killed just so that they could be sold for displays like this? Have they been dug from graves while their families are left wondering where they went? There is already controversy regarding very old buried remains - people fight against it more than some may think - but in those cases the close friends and families of those being unearthed are long-gone. How would you feel if somebody you loved were dug up and sold? THAT BEING SAID, I agree that this is an amazing exhibit that I would like the chance to visit and is a fantastic teaching aid. I think that if we had documentation stating that those that passed wanted their bodies passed on to science - which is a practice already in place in the US for medical studies - then we can say that this IS their final wish and should be honored.

My family and I loved the exhibit.... especially my kids.... they thought it was great to see the insides of people,muscles,veins,etc.... if you have a problem with it don't go! .... don't ban it and ruin it for the people who support it....
