PORTLAND -- Four black crake chicks hatched at the Oregon Zoo this week.

Zoo officials playfully described them on Twitter as "puffballs on stilts" and explained that they were born in the Vollum Aviary but were being hand-reared elsewhere, until the become large enough "to avoid becoming snacks for some of the aviary’s other residents."

Native to sub-Saharan Africa, black crakes belong to a family of birds that include local coots.
