BREMERTON, Wash. – State wildlife officials tranquilized a female bear that was found roaming around Bremerton Monday morning.
The bear was first spotted at about 4:15 a.m. in the backyard of a home on Chester Avenue.
Throughout the morning, wildlife officials received numerous calls about people spotting the bear. Once police and Department of Fish and Wildlife officers spotted it for themselves, the chase was on. Police say the bear was easily jumping over 6-foot high fences as it was being pursued.
Finally, the bear went up a tree in the 1200 block of Eighth Street. Officers tranquilized the bear, causing her to fall. The thick limbs of the tree helped break the fall, and it bounced off the roof of a shed before finally landing on the ground, which was well-padded from tree debris.
Wildlife officials believe she was about 2-years-old.
There's no word yet on what will be done with the bear.
