KIRKLAND, Wash. - Homemade fireworks caused an explosion inside a vehicle on Interstate 405 in Kirkland on Saturday.

The Washington State Patrol says a man filled some balloons with welding gas - a combination of oxygen and acetylene gas - which is normally stored in steel cylinders.

They rubbed together, causing static electricity, and exploded. Troopers say the blast blew out the back window of the pickup truck.

They say the man, woman and 3-year-old girl in the vehicle are lucky they were not injured or even killed in the blast.

Are explosives an 'arm' in the second amendment or does it have to have a barrel?

The Right to Keep and Bear Arms Shall Not be Infringed, eh? Does beggar the question though, why did he need to transport the balloons filled?

deeplyshrouded, making these acetylene balloon bombs are nothing new to the rednecks; so I don't think they are new to the terrorists as well. That being said, we should be so lucky to have terrorists use these devices. It'll be a good way to get rid of themselves before doing harm to others.

I used to blow these off all the time in the 70's and 80's. Static from rubbing balloons was always a concern. We often bought a small inflatable boat and used that. You need both gases if you really want to wake up the neighbors, break windows and knock the china off the shelves. For extra fun leave a pan of toluene or white gas in the boat to get that cool Hiroshima effect. We used model rocket remote igniters so we could set it off at a safe distance.

They should be charged with child endangerment. They could have easily been killed. Some people are so stupid it's scary.

This story is a little wrong. You only need fill the balloons with acetylene, not a mixture of both. You can set off acetylene with merely a spark. Oxygen is only mixed in to make it burn hotter out of a torch. We used to make acetylene bombs at work... ;-)

The guy was an IDIOT for having a 3 year old in the car. Her hearing is probably destroyed and will have life long tinnitus. I hope he is charged with child endangerment.

Not the brightest thing to do but that's minor damage. I know by experience from a friend. I was next door while he was filling a hefty garbage bag with acetylene and oxygen in his kitchen when it detonated. Blew everyone of the windows out of the house. Blew his coveralls off and he came running out the front door naked. He spent a week in the hospital. The walls in the kitchen were bowed out and his girl friend left him. Not something to play with.
