DES MOINES, Wash. -- Spirits are soaring at Des Moines' Aviation High School over a special invitation this weekend.

While President Barack Obama makes two campaign stops in Seattle Sunday, he has invited students from Aviation to attend a fundraiser at the Paramount Theater.

The president says he wants to highlight the school's success, but Republican critics are calling the invite a ploy.

Aviation High School is a national model for STEM schools that focus on science, technology, engineering and math. Curriculum specializes in preparing students for careers including astronauts, engineers and astro physicists.

"It's simply a political ploy," says Peter Graves, representing Washington State Republicans. "It's nothing more than touting policies that he can't claim credit for."

"In a way, we're also using the president as a prop," says one student. "He's going to talk to a whole room of donors...about our school."

The school was founded long before Obama took office, but, so far, he hasnt taken credit for it.

Tickets for the fundraiser start at $1,000.

Aviation High School is part of the Highline School District.

I'm an AHS student who attended. Considering we can't vote, and Obama didn't mention AHS, I'm not sure why we were even invited. It was very boring and, of course, one-sided. But I did learn a bit about politics and picketers

Presidents have been doing this long before Obama, and they will be long after. But it's a sin because it's Obama? Come one people... I know fairness is ridiculous to ask for on a news blog, but really. Dakotanative.... 343 firefighters died along with nearly 3000 civilians, police and military personnel that day. To perpectuate nut-job conspirary theories that have been SOUNDLY disproven to the point of bafoonery, absolutely dishonors their memory and sacrifice. Seriously dude... be better than that.

As a 2008 Aviation High School Alumi, I can say this is a wonderful opportunity for the current students! I hope they represent the school well, and I hope they learn a lot from this experience. Way to go, AHS!

They can be in that crowd of clones that line up behind Obama wherever he goes. I'm not saying these kids aren't smart and movtivated because they are and are on their way to careers that will be rewarding both in earnings and in challenges. But for the advance team of Obamas to put them up as display gagdets is just wrong.

Ironic since Obama is the most anti-aviation president since George H.W. Bush. He can't fool the parents any more, so he is going after the impressionable kids. They'll learn what he is about after his tax proposals kill off private aviation in this country. Good luck with the job hunt!

Its called indoctrinating the children to think he is actually a smart man. Lets see if the kids are educated enough to know he is not.

Ironic, since Obama is the most anti-aviation president since George H.W. Bush. He has given up on trying to fool the parents any more -- but he hopes the kids will still be impressionable enough to believe his bs. We'll see how many of them will be able to find jobs in aviation after he has taxed all the private jets out of business.

So, I actually just graduated from Aviation High this past June and am currently attending Western Washington University with some of my fellow AHS alumni! I am so excited for all the students at AHS to have this epic opportunity to raise awareness for the school and to meet the President! There are so many deserving students attending the school, a school which certainly focuses on aviation as a topic, but also gives you the freedom to explore what you really do like and enjoy with teachers who care about your emotional stability as well the academic side of things. Looking back, I cannot think of more deserving students and teachers!

perhaps aviation high can talk kenmore air into sending one of their seaplanes out for a low altitude fly by! it can be followed by some f-16's blasting through at supersonic speeds!
