STEVENS PASS, Wash. -- Highway 2 near Stevens Pass remained closed friday morning after four avalanches took over portions of the roadway early Thursday morning.

The first snowslide hit around 5 a.m. and covered all lanes about 15 feet deep. No one was injured.

WSDOT avalanche crews were pulled from sites by midday because conditions had become too dangerous. At this point, it's unknown when Highway 2 will reopen. See WSDOT's photos of avalanches

Spokesman Jeff Adamson said the slide pushed jersey barriers aside.  Three other snowslides were later discovered in avalanche chutes near the pass.

Once conditions are deemed stable, crews will have to use explosives for avalanche control work before reopening Highway 2.

In the meantime, Adamson recommends drivers traveling between Eastern Washington and Western Washington use Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass.
