The city of Auburn is considering annexing its neighbor, the troubled city of Pacific.

Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis said he has asked all the department heads to attend Monday night's city council meeting to discuss the pros and cons of merging with Pacific. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Lewis said the goal for both cities is still to keep Pacific whole, but realizes the city of 6,500 residents may have no other choice than to dissolve.

Pacific has been caught up in controversy in recent months. Mayor Cy Sun has been under fire, accused of mismanaging city staff. Because of Sun's questionable practices, the insurance company which provides coverage for Pacific has notified the city council that its policy will be terminated at the end of the year.

Council members who were concerned the city could not function without insurance sent letters to neighboring cities asking them if they would consider annexation. Auburn's mayor says there is no financial incentive, but Auburn wants to help "a neighboring city in trouble."

Pacific City Council President Leanne Guier said her fellow council members will also meet Monday night. They may vote on joining with the city of Auburn that evening as a contingency plan if they cannot find a new insurance carrier before the end of the year.
