JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. -- The Army is preparing to sentence Staff Sgt. Robert Bales at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for killing 16 civilians in Afghanistan.

After considering motions on Monday, the military court begins the sentencing hearing on Tuesday at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, about 35 miles south of Seattle.

Bales pleaded guilty in June in a deal to avoid the death penalty. He faces life in prison. The remaining question for the sentencing hearing is whether or not he'll have the possibility of parole.

Bales admitted leaving his post in Kandahar Province before dawn in March 2012 to attack residents of two nearby villages.
