LAKEBAY, Wash. – Police were still searching for up to four people Friday night involved in a fatal robbery attempt on a marijuana grow operation Thursday. Another five people are in custody.

One robber was killed in the gunbattle that erupted on the Key Peninsula. Police say that man's son and the homeowner were wounded.

"The homeowner was armed. We have a large amount of suspects, not just a few. We believe possibly up to six, seven suspects came to the residence to do a drug rip or residential robbery. The homeowner fired and there was a large gunbattle," said Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Detective Ed Troyer.

Troyer says handguns and shotguns were used and there were about 50 rounds of spent ammunition at the scene.

Another three to four suspects are on the loose. Some of them may be armed. They may also be wounded.

People in the neighborhood are being urged to stay inside, lock their doors and not answer the door.

"...the part that we're concerned about is we still have three, maybe four suspects at large. We don't know if they've been shot or not. (They were) on the side of the road. They took off on foot and (are) armed. We want the neighbors in this area to keep their doors locked," said Troyer. "We're sure they're just trying to get away after what happened. But, we don't want anyone else to become a victim. We don't want them going to look for refuge somewhere and someone unintentionally becoming a victim. So just be alert, call 911. We have a ton of people out here that will get to your location very quickly."

"This is unbelievable," said neighbor Diana McGee.

A woman at a nearby gas station said she heard as many as 15 gunshots.

The suspects came from several communities across King County including Burien, White Center and Maple Valley.

KING 5's Chris Daniels and Drew Mikkelsen contributed to this report.

Granted, it was a drug deal but neither of the men knew who they were dealing with. She knew the father had a large amount of cash on him.It was ruled justifiable homicide after just a few days evidently on the word of drug dealers suspected of selling drugs to minors and taking potshots at another buyer.T he woman is backing up her friends story that it was an armed robbery. She is either afraid of her friends or is lying to save herself. The man was shot four times while there is doubt he even fired one shot. The initial story was exaggerated to the point of absurd. The failure of the media and the authorities to wait for the facts has biased the case against men who trusted the wrong people. In the meantime, the bottom of the barrel drug dealers have been hoisted to the status of mere residents protecting their property. The dead man was convicted without trial or question while those who laid in wait won't even be charged for their drug deal.Scary huh?Do your homework and demand justice.

People shouldn't believe the very first theory that falls out of the authorities mouth before all the evidence is in. It wasn't an armed robbery to steal their pot at all so debating the pot farm is needless. The resident gang associates pulled an Oxycontin bait and switch on a woman who happened to be a friend of theirs. Since the money belonged to one of the men, she led them to believe that it would be taken care of if they gave her a ride up there to switch them out or get a refund. The TWO men who accompanied her to the house had just met this woman through other acquaintances. When they arrived at the house the men got out of their vehicle and were immediately fired upon from several directions. When the son was shot in the leg, the father grabbed a shotgun from the back of the truck and tried to protect his son and ran towards the home away from the bullets. The residents were inside armed and waiting and killed the man. The woman was in on a plot to ambush those men. TBC...

It was not just a bunch of hippies and a grow house for weed folks. What was left out is that the homeowners also sold other drugs, like Oxy and had copious amount of unregistered fire arms (most of which weren't likely even legal) in the home. These guys were running a high profile, illegal drug selling business and they had the weapons because they knew the risk of the lifestyle they chose. I have no sympathy for them.

no matter what anyone does there is always going to be crime does no one realize this fact so the guy was growing weed why does that make him a criminal someone made a good point earlier it was never mentioned if he was growing illegally or not. i would love for people from other areas to come and stay out here and pick which one they would have as a next door neighbor. pot doesn't make people commit crimes they do it because their punks and think they can get away with it, who know maybe they were high on something else. pot is not the reason why dumb crimes get committed.I have lived out in the lake bay area half my life and i have never had a problem from someone that smokes weed. I don't have an opinion on if it should be legalized or not but i know that our problem out here is not pot. it's the people doing meth crack true dope. and as i stated in my previous comment it would make a difference if the cops would respond when you call instead of blowing it off like its nothing.

that's why marijuana should be legalized... medical growers wouldn't be worried about someone trying to rob or take their crop by force... let's seriously stop talking about marijuana like it's a narcotic... there is no comparison with crack or methamphetamines... get real... marijuana is a healing herb... if more people smoked pot there would be less robberies and more love...

Gunfight at the Big Bud Coral We can look at it as a homeowner defends his home from an invasionary force, but, it was a criminal activity that initiated the invasion. Nearby residents armed up in the fray to defend their properties and families. Key point here, they were in place on their own properties to defend. Think of the possibilities had one or more neighbor had gone to the aid of the hit home. Pot is becoming more and more a nuisance drug at best. The criminal element it creates; i.e. harsher drugs and it's development/ deployment, will ever be constant. Would it change if pot were legalized? We won't know the results of that until we make that change in the laws. Bottom line in this, A man took up arms to defend his. Criminals prefer unarmed victims. Thanks for the great coverage of this crime. We need to get the word out that if you intend to do harm, the shoe could drop off the other foot.

bazwest....What is considered large, and what is considered small? If I were a medical card holder, WA Department of Health Rules now define the 60 day supply limit as up to 15 plants and 24 ounces of dried medicine. To some, that is a "substancial marijuana grow". That's a pound and a half of legal medical marijuana a cardholder is allowed to grow for themselves. All I'm saying is they put the story out there and, really, left out some pertinent information that the public has a right to know. Was it or was it not an illegal grow? Was the victim a medical cardholder growing for himself or was he a caregiver? By reading some of the responses here, I believe that some people think ONE plant is too many, medically legal or not. No matter what his situation was, men, armed men, went to HIS house meaning to rob him of his posessions. The man had a right to defend himself and his posessions from people who meant to harm him, which, obviously they were prepared to do. Why is this about pot?

ok why are so many bashing on weed like its crack or something ok look this stuff happens with large pot growing but look at how much it happens with other drugs and booze you know how many time have some tweaker broke in to your car or your house to steel to get money to get more actual dope as in crank, meth, speed, crack, oxys, heroin not weed it happens all the time but a lot people are trying to act like this stuff just happens to people that choose to grow a plant that can grow naturally instead of mixing a bunch of chemicals together to get high i think we need to look into legalize weed if its sold by the state it could bring a lot of money that are state really needs right now also it would bring down the crime rate less drug activity less shootings robings all so the state chould make where that if you want to grow or sell you have to have a business licence or goto jail but insted everyone sits here bashing on weed comparing it to harder drugs and booze owell its what happens

Anybody here know if the "substantial marijuana grow" was being grown by someone who has a LEGAL MEDICAL MARIJUANA CARD? That IS legal in this state ya know. Did anyone here recognize the fact that the article didn't mention that the "substantial marijuana grow" owner has not been charged for ILLEGALLY growing marijuana yet? Nor does it say that this person is being charged with shooting someone who obviously went into this persons home with the intent to subdue the owner by force while they ripped them off. Why is everyone so scared of marijuana anyway? Have you ever tried a little? The funny thing about this is, all of the people who end up bashing marijuana on this board probably work with someone who smokes weed, or knows someone who knows someone who does. It's all around us! Healthy, positive, happy productive members of society smoke weed. Parents smoke weed after kids go to bed, coworkers smoke weed after work and you don't even know it. The robbers got what was coming.

While the pot growers are shooting it out in the burbs, retailers are trying to make liquor easier to obtain by putting it in gas stations and grocery stores. I like state run liquor stores because I never see any teenagers in there "shopping" like I do late at night in my local grocery store, often in the beer and wine aisle. I've seen them shoplift and know that my grocery store won't be any more effective at keeping liquor from being stolen by young people with bad judgment. I have no doubt that pot will eventually be legalized. When it is, I'd like to see it sold only at state run liquor stores. Whether legal or not, history demonstrates that liquor and pot will be available no matter what laws are passed. The key is controlling the distribution, prosecuting people who supply it to underaged persons and imposing heavy civil penalties for people who recklessly endanger other people while enjoying these products. Legalizing low cost pot is a cheap solution to suburban warfare.

well what people fail to realize especially the ones that do not live in our area is that these kind of crimes do not happen often out here. yes we have a lot of drug addicts living out here and yes we have a lot of car accidents out here most involving alcohol but you know what the car accidents could be more preventable if when people out here called the cops about people driving recklessly or what ever the cops are being called for it would help if they would respond. I myself called the cops just a few days ago called the cops twice about someone driving out in the are i live in we gave a description of the car and location but did the police respond no. where i live i have had a friend die at the end of my road and a couple others i did not know die out here i have to pass that every day and see what can happen. if the cops out here would just respond when they get a call it would make a big difference. then maybe people would trust to call them when something goes wrong.

The truth, no ones view point is silly. This is a discussion. Our society has a problem with this drug and the laws we have don't seem to be working. There are current costs to society and individuals. Can we reduce this cost with different laws? I think yes. But, we need to follow current laws. But are they working? No. People are going to break this law and have been doing for years. That's reality. We are in a catch 22 if we follow the same policies.

I see it all the time people complain complain complain but don't go out and vote, don't contact their officials, don't peacefully organize etc etc. By breaking the law you ARE NOT proving a point you are giving the law supporters MORE AMMO.

thetruth01....Hear hear! I agree everyone knows it illegal and you should follow the law. But, what are the repercussions of this law? Is it working as it stands now? No. Can we afford the costs? No. Does society want to take the callous approach "if they get shot its their own fault"? I don't. Does society want to pay the price of the currrent law? I hope not, I don't. Society should look for alternatives that can effect these costs and reduce the bloodshed.

Konner, take the illegal premium put on pots value out of the equation and the incentive is reduced for crimes like home invasions for pot. But, there will always be crime and criminals. Criminals should be punished and home owners should be able to protect their homes.

Either way illegal is illegal, EVERYONE knows that it is illegal to grow/sell dope so if they get shot it is their own fault. I really don't care if we should legalize it or decriminalize it UNTIL THEY DO IT IS ILLEGAL! BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE A LAW IT IS NOT JUSTIFICATION TO BREAK THE LAW! Their are a TON of laws that I think are stupid and should be repealed yet I still follow them. If I were to get in trouble for breaking those laws that is my own fault and I would need to take responsibility for my actions plain and simple.

Swatguy, I hear your frustration. But, pot and its problems will not go away when it is accepted by a large part of our community, highlighted by its community approval for medical uses. So, how can we make things better...not perfect. With it legalized, the law enforcement community and community standards (MADD) can be put in place. With it illegal, it is controlled by the underground community. Javajoe, have you ever heard of someone gunning down a farmer in a Tobacco field? Legalize it. Tax it. Take the huge mone incentive out of it for criminals. Control it the best we can, like alcohol.

The only way to remove the benefits the illegal drug trade enjoys from marijuana is complete legalization and decriminalization. If you can legally grow your own, the result is that demand falls faster than the stock market fell on black Tuesday. Legalization is the only thing that can remove the money motive. After legalization, when it comes to any back-end penalties associated with its use, we should treat it like any other DUI. The entire issue is companies like 3M, Dupont, big oil, Bayer, Bristol Meyers, etc., keep lining the pockets of the politicians to keep hemp and marijuana illegal. Both are serious threats to their bottom line.

Remember Al Capone and the prohibition years? This is no different. Our current drug laws create these situations, and the laws regarding marijuana were never about health or safety, they were racially motivated, as well as finincially, as the Hearst family and Du Pont both had lots to gain, and helped finance those laws to thwart competition from the then thriving hemp business. Legalize it. Tax it. Get over it.

dede1978, you seem to be missing the whole point. This was over a harmless plant that was declared a class 2 drug, illegal to possess, so that a bunch of rich turds could get richer. The brainwashing has never stopped. Now you have tons of law enforcement against legalization since they would lose their jobs. It all comes down to money. The irony is the fact that there has been billions spent trying to stem marijuana, and it is more prevalent than ever. The government caused the condition and is unwilling to budge to fix it. We are slowly chipping away at it, but it has taken 50 years to get this far. Government cannot admit they made a huge mistake with a second prohibition. They know it doesn't work.

If you're growing pot, expect a visit from armed thieves. These people brought this problem to the neighborhood and put themselves and their neighbors in jeopardy. "Stupid" can get you killed. "Stupid" is having a "substantial" grow operation so that thieves can expect a large amount of cash and plenty of crop suitable for harvest. Crime pays... and then you're dead. Defending your illegal grow operation isn't going to be a case of "self defense"... forget whatever the lawyer tells you. He's a public defender... slightly better than a law student. Expect a murder charge since the gunfight occurred during the commission of a felony. So if you're not dead at the scene, you're dead in prison. See, "stupid"!

I own a cabin and acreage about a mile from there and plan to move from Seattle shortly. As a gunowner, I would hope that the killing of the tweaker by the homeowner tweaker would be justified and a separate issue altogether. However, it seems, it could be also interpreted as killing someone during the commission of a crime (the prolonged growing operation). There is still a lot of this type of activity out there in that area.

The only difference is that this time it made the headlines. No one cares when it involves an elderly couple or a drive by. This is only a headliner for the pot amount and that it involved many bullets. i believe we, citizens, need to stand our ground no matter the situation and I pray for those on both ends for their families are the true vicims that pay the consequences for these acts. Both were in the wrong and all sides pay. may I pray follow neighbors that we all rest ashured and have peace of mind when all parties are found and may you all live to see another day. Operate an illegal grow and distribution operation....well bad guys like going after other bad guys because it's easier to go after someone who can't call the cops. Hopefully RCW 9A.16.050 covers his actions, and he was in imminent danger when he shot each of them (nobody shot in the back sort of deal). I seriously wish the state would adopt a Castle Doctrine law and a Stand Your Ground law. As it stands we have the "Duty to retreat" law, and that just plain sucks. You have to be in danger of having a felony committed upon your person or property and have no way out in order to be protected when you kill the ba$tards.

Josh, I understand you must be frustrated, but really? Do you really think the kind of people going around and gunning people down in their homes are going to be reading your comment? Furthermore, even if they were sitting in front of a computer, reading people's comments, do you think they would care? They're sick, they're not going to stop because someone asked them to please get along with the rest of us.

It's only going to get worse...if you aren't saved you might want to take that into consideration now.
