MESA, Ariz. - Police are searching for a suspect who threw acid on the face of an Arizona woman who had arrived home and was getting out of her car.
Mesa police said Friday that 41-year-old Derri Velarde was being treated for second-degree burns to her face and chest area after the attack Thursday.
Velarde was getting out of her car when she was approached by a woman holding a container of what looked like water.
"She just looked at me, with these eyes, as if say something," she said.
But the woman didn't say anything before the acid was thrown in Velarde's face. She's being treated for second-degree burns on her face and chest.
Police say the act does not appear to be random. They are following up on leads to find the female suspect, between 30 and 40 years old.
A similar attack that was random occurred Monday in Vancouver, Wash., where a woman threw a cup of acid on the face of 28-year-old Bethany Storro as she was getting something from her car before heading into a Starbucks.
The suspect, who Storro said told her "Hey pretty girl, do you want to drink this?" before she attacked her, still has not been found.
